We're going to Comic Con this year, and I'm trying to book a hotel. Dumb- I should've done this already.
Hotels by the convention center are $$$, obviously. But, I've never been to San Diego. Where should we be staying? We don't mind public transport, probably won't be renting a car.
Also- aside from major tourist attractions, what should we try to see?

Are you dressing up?
Try to get out to the beach on Coranado island. It's lovely, but it probably won't be super warm. The fancy hotel there has fantastic fudge in one of the stores so you should eat that.
spitforspat SDCC hotels are done through a housing bureau. Those rooms are long gone. Anything even remotely close to the CC or on one of the shuttle routes is going to be insanely expensive. Try Mission Valley- it is not close, but parts of it are on the shuttle route to the CC, and it's far enough out that it's less desirable to people looking to book rooms. You might also try looking at rentals, though everything that week jumps in price.

Without a car, you'll probably want to stay in the Gaslamp District as it is nearest to the Convention Center. Otherwise, you can try the Old Town area or there is a Double Tree in Mission Valley, both are along the trolley route. Hotel Circle has a lot of options, but not great access to the trolley. Our bus system isn't really worth looking into because it takes a ridiculously long time to get anywhere.
ETA: I mention the Double Tree specifically because there is a trolley stop right out front. The other hotels in the Mission Valley area aren't as trolley convenient.
SDCC runs its own shuttle system. The map is on the website. One of the routes does run into MV. Those are free. The hotels in the Gaslamp will all be $$$$$ for rooms, if you can find one.

Thank you! I never would have thought to look for an SDCC-run shuttle.
I just got off the phone with H and asked him if he wanted to go because SCULLY AND HERCULES AND PEOPLE IN COSTUMES, YO, and he said that it was tempting, but no, and then he called me a nerd and said he was going to take my lunch money and stuff me in a locker when I got home.

You should go and take selfies of yourself with all the people in costume that are cooler than him. Like Iron Man. I've never been to a con where I saw less than 3 iron man costumes, lol. Ok well and deadpool, but your H might not consider him cool.
