What gets me are the Amazon registries with, say, the 2-star rated item with reviews saying the thing never worked right/stopped working after two uses/etc., when there's an alternative, comparably-priced item with glowing 4.5-star reviews. WHY would someone register for the one that's obviously crappy?
This is where I'm at to. But when the reasoning is "well that (the poorly reviewed hunk of junk) is what fits our decor," it makes me laugh. Ok then. Good luck!

I researched the hell out of my registry, and still had stuff I barely used (I'm looking at YOU, RNP). I registered for a few clothes, just so people would know my "style" and not buy a bunch of frilly crap that I would hate. I knew my MIL would have that covered, anyhow, after going through seven grandsons and no granddaughters, lol.
I guess I'm a lone dissenter in that I didn't find Baby Bargains helpful in the least. I loved my Britax travel system and plan to use the hell out of the stroller portion now that she's in a convertible. The one recommendation that I did use was in buying a crib *not* made in China (according to the book), but when it showed up, it was stamped, "Made in China" all over it. So, bleh.
No, but only because I do all of my friend's registries for them. I'm an obsessive researcher and they just trust my choices. I've probably done 20+ registries at this point, no complaints yet!
Please inform me ASAP of what I need to buy for #2 that has come out in the last 2 years. I have done no research since having E and I am sure there are a bunch of new things that I just "need" to have.
Well... I just looked at the registry of an acquaintance who is expecting her third girl, there is a two year gap between the new baby and her second child and she registered for 110 items. I mean ALL of Babies R Us is on her registry.

I have a friend with $$$ whose registry is filled with $$$$ things and most if it bought. Mostly I'm jealous. But there's a $149 BUmPER! I'm upset because some bought it and I'm afraid that she is going to use it.
Yup, just looked at my cousins. She has registered for clothes, 1000 blankets, a jumperoo, 200 toys and teethers, and I think maybe there was a carseat/travel system. It's just odd. It looks like someone who has no idea what she is doing with regards to parenting/having a child which is pretty much true lol. It's an oops pregnancy with some guy she now says is her fiance.
I'm feeling this way too. I have a pretty small registry that people are probably judging. But there are reasons: I have no idea what we really need and I already bought a bunch of the essential stuff on clearance at Target. My shower is going to be super small so I mostly have small things on there that my friends might buy. Then I have bunch of pricier things for my in laws and a few relatives who *might* buy us gifts but won't be at the shower.
This thread is making me feel like crap. If one of you want to tell me what to put on my registry, I'll take as much advice as you have to give. I've been reading Lucie's List and Baby Bargains and trying to figure it out, but it crazy overwhelming. And honestly, the more I read, the more conflicting advice I see. Everyone's baby is different, so what works for one mom doesn't for another. Just because the stuff you see didn't work for you, doesn't mean it didn't work for someone else. Reviews can vary a lot from place to place, and maybe a new mom trusts her sister's or BFFs advice more than a random amazon reviewer.
Maybe I'm just sensitive because when I went to visit my SIL she sat down with my registry and basically gave me all her recommendations that were different than the stuff I had already registered for. I appreciate her advice came from a good place, she's just tryign to help. But she also spent a LOT more money than we can and was basically saying I needed to change out all the stuff on my registry. Since I know most of it isn't going to be gifted to us and I'm probably going to end up buying it in the end, I'm sorry I can't go as high end as she did.

rikki you should make a separate post asking about this. I would like to know too! And your thread will get more replies than mine would.
I don't necessarily judge, but I recently went to a shower for a family friend's daughter-in-law who is 19, and I really wished I could have went with her to register. However, since we've only met once I figured that might be a little weird.
She had things on there like an $80 bottle warmer, 2 different breast pumps, an expensive bedding set, and some fancy breastmilk storage system. I mean, if you want all those things, go for it, but I really wanted to tell her that you don't NEED a bottle warmer, you really only need sheets because the bumper/quilt isn't safe for baby, and regular Target breastmilk storage bags work fine. I did tell her MIL (our friend) that she should look into getting a pump from her insurance.
I found registering very stressful! I had no idea what I was doing, so I mainly followed Lucie's List and tried to figure out if I needed one stroller or five (for the record, we currently have two).
I didn't have bouncy seats and swings and stuff on mine because I got eight billion hand me downs, so that might be a factor on why some people are missing essential things.
I am returning a couple of things I registered for and have figured out we won't use (like a Bumbo seat). Overall, though, I really tried to stick to things we'll really use. We'll see how I did soon!
I'm not judging small registries, FWIW. Actually, it's usually the opposite: The ones I'm most likely to question are the ones with tons of things. I was a registry minimalist, and didn't register at all for pricier things I wasn't sure we'd use, like a Rock-n-Play, swing, Jumperoo, etc. Lucky for me, we didn't need any of those things. The "big" items on the registry were a stroller, car seat, Pack-n-Play, and Beco Gemini carrier. Otherwise, it was things I'd use no matter what, like cotton wash cloths, kimono onesies, swaddle blankets, baby tub, nail scissors, thermometer...
I think at most there were 50 items on the registry. And there's nothing wrong with bigger registries, I just think it's a little odd to register for an Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper, and a Rock-N-Play, and a bassinet, and a Pack-N-Play... And yes, I will always think it's really strange/ignorant to register for a high-back booster. The kid won't be able to use that for five years. Chill.
Eh I'm sure people judged our registry. I used Lucie's List for most of it, but there were a lot of things that we got second hand or bought ourselves when we got a good deal, so I'm sure we were "missing" a lot of things.
LOL. Nothing real exciting. Let's just say I wouldn't b*tch if someone sent me J&J babywash (and would happily use it) instead of the CA baby. I have a $200.00 diaper bag I'll take to the grave with me. I hate plastic high chairs. If I wasn't done with kids I'd own a baby Brezza...haha. I don't have complaints about the clothes people buy my kids. Baby bucket seats are a giant PITA to me. My baby bjorn was the only carrier my kids liked (and now they're scarred for life). I can't figure out the half of those wraps you're supposed to put babies in..haha.
I should maybe rephrase it to I hate the stuff you all love. Like I got 18 swaddleMes and A&A blankets and 17 of them are still in the package. I don't get the love for super pricey bottles. I don't own a baby bath tub. I don't have a RNP. I don't get the point of a Wubbanub.
Basically, I'm weird. And a baby gear minimalist.
You had me until the Wubanub and swaddle me blankets. My son LOVES swaddling but can get out of every swaddle I do with a normal blanket. Also the wub is cute, and the animal helps keep it in.

People knowing my style hasn't seemed to help me. My MIL gave me one darling outfit that is very much my style - and when I opened it and said how much I loved it she even said that it just had seemed like my style and something I would like. Then I opened the rest of the outfits she got us and they were frilly, neon, things that said "Mommy's Sunshine" - so although she knew my style she still apparently wanted to buy what she wanted to buy.
Meh. I'm sure some people thought my registry was missing tons of stuff. I've never had a rnp, jumperoo, I only had an umbrella stroller, no monitor, etc.
I never ended up needing or buying any of it and I'm so glad I don't have as many big things to lug around with each or our moves (3 since DS1 was born.)

I got our Britax stroller and bucket seat based on the Baby Bargains recommendation.
The only baby registry that I judged was one that was ridiculous. Not only did it have every baby and toddler product ever made, it had 4-5 each of big ticket items (as in 4 high chairs, 4 strollers, etc) These people lived in a 1 BR apartment so there's no way they could use all this stuff and I know there's a good chance that whatever I bought wouldn't have been used anyway. I bought books instead. Otherwise, I always stick to the registry.

Who's this you all? Was there some baby gear MMM symposium that declared what was useful and what was crapola?
It was just an expression. All encompassing as the internet as a whole. Referring to the most popular consensus. And to some extent I would say there was a MMM symposium as the same 6 things baby things get suggested over and over over again.
What is there to judge? When I made mine, I had no time or interest to research every single thing. We wound up with 2 cribs because I forgot I had put one on the registry at BBB and BRU, so we took 1 back and got store credit. Problem solved. We went to BRU that first weekend DD was home to buy a few things. Over the next few weeks, I used Amazon Prime to get the rest of what I thought we needed after living with DD - bottle sterilizer, bottle warmer. And going to Target after my husband came home in the evenings during those first few months to buy stuff was fun for me.
If I had known the lady at BBB gets a bonus if I scan a certain number of things, I would've scanned a ton more crap on there. She was nice and pointed me toward my stroller which I love.
In our circles if a mom (or bride) wants cash, she doesn't make a registry. I judge that. At least let me have the fun of going to BBB and buying you some ridiculous feeding "essentials" which you can then take back for whatever it is you really wanted. Don't even get me started on this Honeyfund BS I've had to do lately for weddings. The most recent one pissed me off because Honeyfund was all "We're going to Greece!" but when I asked the bride about the trip she was like "uh we just did that real quick, we might go in September?" In a few years these people are going to be signing up on the Babyfund or whatever lame equivalent there will be.
I just bought a shower gift and the registry had almost nothing left. I got her an extra base for the car seat (I think?!) because everything else on there seemed not necessary. But what do I know.

We legitimately used a bassinet, RnP, PnP, and a crib. We used three of the four all on the same day, every day, until DD outgrew the RnP and bassinet. :^)
I am one of four children in my entire generation on my very large, very close, and very generous side of the family. Since my generation is so small, babies are pretty rare events, and everybody gets overwhelmingly excited. DH has a big family, too. We had a huge registry and had to add more a couple of weeks before my family's shower because people were calling my mom and asking her about it. I'm sure people judged us when they saw the registries, but whatever.

Graco Milestone or Graco 4ever are really the way to go if you're thinking ahead to booster times already. I was, since it really kills me that I got about 20 uses total out of or bucket and convertible seats with DD.
But I didn't register for anything this time around and can't remember what I had on my registry with my first kid, so I don't have a dog in this fight.

I had a couple of girls from work tell me nicely "I don't think you're going to like x,y or z, and here's why" and so I changed it. At the time, I felt like they were a little judgey of my registry, but turns out, they were right about most of their suggestions. I think some BTDT moms are judgey about registries, based on some other comments I've heard IRL. For me, part of the fun of being a first time mom was picking all my stuff out and I don't want to rob anyone else of that experience.
I don't judge when people register for bedding. Yeah, it may not be used right away, but we put bumpers on and starting using the comforter after a year, its nice to have the matching set. And, before baby came we had it set up in the crib so it was nice to look at for those few weeks.
I also don't judge the wipes warmer, littleOlive loves his warm wipes!
I do judge when people register for breast feeding stuff, which I guess is a problem in and of it self. I just feel like my breasts are personal and I don't want someone thinking about them or my nipples as they buy me a pumping bra or lotion, lol. I also really judge people who register for a pump, bc aren't pumps covered by pretty much all insurances now a days?
Clothes are annoying on a registry, but I don't see it that often.
I just created a registry for baby #2 and top of my list was a RNP. I didn't get one the first time around bc I didn't want to instill bad sleep habits (sleeping on an incline, sleeping with a rocking motion) HA!! What did I know? This time around I registered for one that vibrates, plays music and rocks all by itself for up to 6 hours! Momma is going to get sleep this time around!!
As much as my MIL drives me insane sometimes, I am still infinitely grateful to her for the breast pump (Medela PISA) she bought off of my registry for me with DD. I would not have made it to 25 months of nursing without that thing!
