I'm glad you guys have a diagnosis and can move forward!
Check with your local chapter of Autism Speaks-the one here really helps a ton of families (I'm just basing this on the families I have worked with with kids on the spectrum). They may have some quick resources and suggestions on where to begin.
My dad is north of Pittsburgh and has a child he adopted that is n the spectrum. He is medium-low functioning If I had to guess from my experience. I just asked him for recommendations and will pass along what he gives me but if you have any specific questions I would be more than happy to ask.
Big hugs to you. I'm glad you were a little prepared b/c it can be hard to hear. The good news is that now that you officially have a diagnosis you can get services in place. Your little boy is still an awesome kid who has a great life ahead of him.
My brother is on the spectrum and had a late diagnosis (late middle school I believe). What bronxgirl said is accurate. Having great parents like you in his corner will positively impact him so much. SO MUCH.
The next time I talk to my mom I can get some recommendations for you. She has an extensive library of the non-Jenny McCarthy variety.
I second the rec for Autism Speaks. My cousin's son is on the spectrum, and they have been an amazing resource. Her public school has been great as well, and helped her track down things like special summer camps at no cost, childcare that specializes in helping kids with ASD, lots of local support. He's done so well since getting diagnosed, it really helped them focus their efforts, therapies, etc.
hugs. i've got a friend with a son around that age that was diagnosed early on. hes such a great kid! he and his mom have become very involved in their area and its great to see.

Lots of hugs. You're in western PA, right? I wonder if there's an autism clinic/research dept. at Pitt. One the academic centers near us has a fantastic office that has social workers that help guide parents through different resources, therapies, etc.
Always keep in mind that nothing changed from yesterday to today. He's still the same wonderful little boy. He just now has a diagnosis that can help him get the services he deserves.

This is what I was coming to say. You got this- you're a wonderful, caring mother. So many hugs.
@domerjen - I can get you some book recs and post this week if you'd like. We have a special needs collection overseen by a librarian whose son is on the spectrum. I'm positive she'll have great recommendations.
Hugs to you. I know the official diagnosis is hard even when you're expecting it.
Western Pa gives you access to the PA IUs for school based intervention and CHOP Pittsburgh's ASD services.
I'm not a fan of Autism Speaks, but their "First 100 Days" information is awesome. James Coplan's "Making Sense of Autism Spectrum Disorders" is the best first book for newly dxd parents. His positive attitude and respect for parents is evident on every page. DS is about 85% Coplan's "Teddy"- we even signed a release for the book.
