I know we have time to figure this out, but I'm starting to think about DD's big girl room for when the baby comes this fall. The crib and dresser are staying in the nursery and DD will be moving to the guest room. We currently have a white queen sized bed in there that was ours before we upgraded. We've had 6 sleepovers with guests since we moved in just over a year and a half ago, MIL being the most frequent (4 times).
We could move DD to the queen bed directly (with side rails) and assume that she will keep that bed forever.
We could buy DD a twin or full sized bed and sell / give away the queen bed
Buy DD a toddler bed and save the queen bed for when she's bigger
Something else?
Other relevant or not information:
- We have two queen sized air mattresses and a "bonus room" over the garage, so MIL could sleep on one of those in either room (or if we have a queen or full in DD's room, she could sleep there).
- We have a free to us couch in the bonus room but could purchase a fold out if we wanted a bed in there eventually.
- The queen takes up a big portion of DD's room. We don't currently have nightstands or a dresser in there - it might be tight once we do.
-Storing the bed would not be impossible but somewhat annoying since the mattress (ikea) weighs one million pounds and we'd have to bring it down two flights of curved stairs.
I would buy either a twin with a trundle or a full size for in there. It still gives you the ability to sleep two guests if you need the space and for her to have sleepovers when she gets older. Plus add the dresser. I wouldn't do a toddler bed. They seem like a huge waste to me when a bed with rails (or the trundle mattress that is on the floor) works perfectly well. We don't have dressers in the girls rooms (DH's idea is that baskets of clothes on bookshelves is much better...it's not and we have fought about it too many times to count) and I hate it. You'll want the extra space so that she can have space for a few toys, a bookshelf, whatever.
Id move the queen bed into the bonus room and make that the guest room.
Depending on how big the space is in your DD's new room, I'd buy either a twin or a double. I personally don't see the point in toddler beds.
Thanks for your thoughts! I should have mentioned that the bonus room is currently the play room. It's huge so we could potentially use half as the guest bedroom but I'm not sure if H would go for that . We have a lot of toys!
Just food for thought: We have a full size bed in DS1's room and I HATE it. HATE. It's too big for him, it's too big for the room and makes everything seem cluttered and cramped. If I could do it again, I would by a twin without hesitation.
I would put a twin or full in DD's room so she can have the floor space for playing and for when you put a dresser in there. A pull out couch in the bonus room seems like the best option because then it can be added seating for when you don't need it as a bed. I wouldn't bother with a toddler bed
I would give her the existing queen. DS1 has always had a queen. I have always lived the fact that there is plenty of room for us (plus the other kiddos) to curl up and read in his bed together.
We're in a similar situation, in that DD will move into what's currently the guest room, which has a queen size bed. It's not a huge room, so we were initially planning to get rid of the queen bed and get a twin with a trundle underneath. The more we've thought about it though, I think we're going to keep the queen bed and add rails, and see how that works out for now.
We only have three bedrooms, so if DD and LO#2 are able to share down the road at some point, I'd like to give that a try so that we can have a guest room, and it seems silly to spend the money on a new bed for DD now and then risk not being able to get a matching bedframe for LO#2 in a few years. Our most frequent houseguests are my parents and I don't think my dad (6'5") will fit on a twin bed if we were to put that in DD's new room (the plan is for them to sleep in her room when they visit, and DD will sleep on the floor with them or with us). Also, DD really doesn't spend much time in her room yet - if she's awake, she's downstairs with us - so while there would definitely be more space with a twin bed, I am not sure it's necessary at this point. Plus, to make it MM, it seems silly to get rid of a perfectly good queen size matress (we have no place to store it) and buy a new bed
Id move the queen bed into the bonus room and make that the guest room.

Ditto exactly. We moved DD right into a twin (so she had more floor space in her room) and it's been fine. She is 2 next week and has slept through the night and napped without a fuss. I've had to go put her back in bed less than 5 times, total.
