So we head to Boston in a few weeks. I am going to assume there will still be winter weather and pack accordingly.
I have a few questions: -Our flight lands around 1130 pm, what is the best way to get from the airport to the Sheraton in back bay? We will have a 1 year old, the hotel stops free shuttles at 10. On our way out the shuttle can take us back to the airport.
-We haven't planned each day yet but is it best to walk places, take buses, train (dependant on weather?)? Places we would like to go: Salem, Fenway, Sam Adams, Harvard, Freedom Trail and shops along that. There's more but you get the idea. I think I have a good list of things we would like to see/eat from the other Boston threads.

I'd call the hotel and ask if they run special shuttles for later arrivals. Also check to see if Massport's new nonstop bus from Logan to Back Bay will be running yet. There is public transport, but you'd have to do at least one transfer. If you're not up for that, bring a carseat and take a cab. Sorry :/
I would plan on taking public transport to wherever you plan on going in the city. Whether bus or train or walking will depend on where it is you want to go. The hotel should be able to help guide you.

Thanks! It never occured to me to see if they would do a late pick up, I'll call. I think we would be fine transferring other days but maybe not coming in that night.
Should we get a Charlie Card if we plan to bus it?

If you'll be in the city for a week and plan to see a lot, it'll be worth it.
www.mbta.com is the link to the rail/bus/subway system called the T. Due to the chaotic winter, our T is having a ton of trouble currently. I'd rethink Salem as it is a bit out of the city. The trains do go there but it is not a convenient trip without a car.
The Sam Adams Tour is a lot of fun. We got there very early, like right when it opened and did the tour and tasting. There is a trolley that will take you to a neighborhood bar too that was fun. Typical bar food but it was good.
The Freedom Trail goes all over the place so i would look up specific things on it you want to see and plan that. You may not want to walk the whole thing if it is freezing.
Fenway is walkable from a T stop (we went for a baseball game). Not sure what the area around there is like off season. Lots of bars and red sox stores when we were there.
The Logan-Back Bay shuttle doesn't run that late, and the T does run til 12:30AM but I would just take a cab. It will be late, you'll have a ton of gear and it will be a pain if you're not familiar with the system. It will probably be about $40 with tip to the Sheraton because there are a bunch of fees to cross the tunnel from the airport, even though it will only be a 10-15 minute ride.
You can get everywhere you want to go on the T or Commuter Rail, but try to avoid traveling during rush hour if you can. The snow is clearing up a bit in the city already and will hopefully be much better by the time your trip rolls around.
Thank you all for the info! I knew there was still snow but I hadn't heard about the issues it was causing with transportation, I will keep that in mind.
Sounds like a cab is our best bet if the hotel won't do a shuttle. It also sounds like I should loosely plan our days and see what the weather will be like, and take any thing off that might notbe weather appropriate. (We originally were thinking the ferry to Salem but not anymore, also a whale watching tour but no.)

I'd guess closer to $20-25. Its $40 with tip from Logan to my house in Somerville.
It's $35 to my condo in South End which is a bit closer to the airport than Back Bay. The tunnel fees are the killer.

Yeah I paid $35 home to Back Bay a few weeks ago. I'm staying at the Hilton across from the Sheraton now (I live in the area and my ceiling caved in from ice/water/snow). Fenway (Kenmore T stop) is walkable from here or one stop from the Hynes Station - you will be at the Prudential station but that line doesn't go to Kenmore.
I would nix the water stuff and skip Salem. There is so much to do in the city unless you are really into Salem. The snow has impacted a lot of transit so I would go for the T over the bus especially if it's cold. There is still snow all over the stops and routes may be affected. A prepaid Charlie card is the only way to ride the T - or a week pass. Check out a lot of restaurants if you're into food.

Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry about your ceiling! I've been worried about this with our building too. What a nightmare, hope the fix is smooth and soon!
