PDQ DH's good friend was arrested yesterday for (allegedly) stealing prescription medication from a clients house. Apparently this wasn't the first time he was investigated and he's been charged for 3 separate occasions.
If convicted, he will, at a minimum, lose his (extremely lucrative) job and probably face jail time.
DH is devastated. His friend says its a giant "misunderstanding" but we have a feeling its not when there is more than one client who has come forward. We are just so sad that he wasn't able to get any professional help or whatever that may have prevented him from doing this. We support him 100% in whatever he needs but we also have sympathy for the people he stole from.
He recently married the sweetest girl, too.
I don't know why im posting this here other than the fact that I don't want to talk about it IRL because so far it's stayed out of the press so very few people know.
So sad, addiction is a crazy thing. I hope he gets the help he needs also.
I have a friend who's husband went off to rehab 2 weeks after they got married (and lost his job in the process since it took longer than 12 weeks - FMLA). She had no idea how bad things were with him and they had dated/lived-together for 4 years prior. It was a rocky start and struggle for several years.

Does his job not have an EAP? He needs to go to the HR Department and speak to them. He obviously has an illness and if he is good at his job they don't want to lose him. We have had people here who were (1) Incarcerated and still kept their jobs (2) Put into work release where we had to modify their schedules. (3) Stay employed while in rehab.

The issue is that he was arrested for theft - which the company has a zero tolerance policy on, given the industry. However he could absolutely have stayed at his job if he had went to them with a drug problem. The issue is the theft charge (from clients), even if that stems from a drug problem. I think its actually a regulatory thing in the province, not even just company policy.
Like in my job I can't keep my real estate license if convicted of certain crimes. It's a licensing issue, not company policy.
I don't know if there is a way for him to plead guilty of a lesser crime or not.
I'm just so sad for him and his family. I'm also sad for DH who feels really blindsided by this - like their entire friendship was a lie. He's supportive he's just upset he didn't know earlier to try and help him, if that makes sense.
I think i read this in the news. That's tough. I hope he gets some help for the addiction which gives him a lighter sentence.
So there's a few errors in the news story according to other friends. Our friend is swearing complete innocence and it may actually be true. I don't know what to believe, I want to believe him but I know how evil drugs can be. I love the guy regardless. He's an amazing person.
He was suspended from his job today and the company sent out a memo telling people before the guy himself knew. That is shitty.

That's rough that they told other people before him. I so hope what he is swearing is true. I hate seeing people's lives get totally screwed up over 1 mistake.
