But srsly...how does an 11 year old know who christian grey is? And what mom is like "it's his idea, so I let him." Be a parent. "It's his idea but it SUCKS and is INAPPROPRIATE so I'm not allowing it"
Yeah, I just really, really don't get how it could be "his idea". So you're saying he either read the book or saw the movie in order to know who the character is? WTF?

He may know vaguely who the character is, but probably doesn't know for sure what the character actually does. Maybe he knows it's controversial and a hot topic of discussion. He thinks maybe it's like dressing up as a bad guy or a rich guy or a handsome guy. This is what parents are for.
I also felt like a parent should have nixed the Ebola hazmat suit I saw on a 10ish year old at our pediatrician's Halloween party. Kids often know what grown-ups are talking about. They just don't understand the full meaning.
ETA: Kids also won't necessarily admit they don't understand what something means because they don't want to look uncool or stupid. I called my brother a derogatory name for a homosexual that starts with f when I was like 11 and when my mom asked if I knew what it meant I was like duh, of course. I thought it just meant dork or nerd but was a curse word. I had heard an 8th grader use it at school. I shudder at the memory.

Do you guys really think an 11 year old couldn't have secretly gotten his hands on a copy of the book and read it? That's middle school age, right? Totally plausible that mom doesn't know he read it.
