You've presented me with quite a challenge, and I am thinking hard about this.
No worries.
I actually have a tight feeling in my chest at the moment, which is apparently what happens now when I get excited about wedding related stuff until it dawns on me that as of right now, we still might have to reschedule.
That realization always knocks me down a peg or two.
You can take the MUNI and BART everywhere in SF. You don't need a car. If you are staying in Union square, it doesn't get more central than that!! All the must see places are easily accessible from there. And there's a TON of shopping in union square. I'm going next week and we won't be renting a car and I won't be walking much, so public transport it will be!
I love San Francisco so much, you will have an awesome honeymoon there!!

So...is your fiance good at planning at all?
I planned the wedding, and my husband planned the honeymoon.

Division of labor starts now!
Lol I love planning holidays (and the wedding). And no, he is not. I'm more than happy to do it, but I will be more happy when we k now that it will actually happen.
We'll probably do a European trip in the Spring. I'll have him plan that one out. He knows woefully little about the US though, so him planning it would suck.
I would spend more time in SF instead of flying back to Vegas, personally. I've only been once but it was beautiful and I would have loved more time there, while I think 3 days in Vegas is plenty.

Here are two ideas:
OPTION 1 Fly to San Francisco. Spend a few days there. Then take the ferry to Napa and drink wine and have sex. Take the ferry back. One more night in SF. Fly home. OPTION 2 Fly to Key West. Spend your entire time there. The beaches aren't fantastic, but it's a funky, fun little town to explore, and it can be done on the cheap. The nightlife is cool, the restaurants are laid-back and tasty, and there is no timeline.
I've been legit hot in SF more than once but in general I find it just right. I would spend the majority of your time exploring SF then do a trip to Sonoma/Napa/Yountville. I was just in Sonoma last weekend and I just love that area. So pretty! And you can definitely take a bus between that area and SF.
Chicago can be a little too hot in the summer, but you definitely wouldn't need a car, and there are always so many things going on in the summer.
For just relaxing, Block Island, Rhode Island would be great.
For a mixture, I would skip Vegas in August, head straight to SF for 5 days, then spend a few either in Napa or up the coast. There is a beautiful spot here that's a bit of a drive, but so worth it. But, as other people said, coastal Northern California in August is warm-ish during the day and downright chilly at night.

I wouldn't count on hanging out at the beach if you go to San Francisco. While I love northern California beaches, they are not the lay out on the sand all day kind of places. The northern California coast is rocky and windy. It is a very different kind of beauty than the typical beach vacation experience. Also, California is on the cold side of the Pacific Ocean. Even in southern California, the water temperature is cold. In northern California it is colder. Last time I went to the beach here in the summer I wore long pants, a jacket and a wool hat. I didn't touch the water.
The only place I have ever been 'hot' in SF is sitting in the sun during a late summer, day baseball game at ATT Park. That place has its own weather system.
We did New Orleans without a car. It was fine and easy enough to get around.
Nola in August is hot as balls!
Yes - way too hot humid in NOLA in August!
Based on your budget and what you want, it sounds like the Bahamas, Cancun or somewhere in the Carribbean (visas permitting) would be best. Someone also mentioned PR.
One of my favorite memories: driving an out of town friend from south San Jose to south San Francisco in August. We left the house and the car thermometer read 104. We drove 50 miles and when I dropped her off it was 54 and raining. I think my friend thought we had gone through some kind of worm hole.
