All day and night I think about holidays to hot* places. For our honeymoon we're thinking 3 nights in Vegas, fly to San Fran for 3 nights, then back to Vegas for a couple days.
Tell me what's great about San Francisco. Must sees? Must eats?
It looks like an incredible city but I don't know a ton about it.
I'd spend more time in San Francisco. It's amazing. Can't type more as I'm on my ohone, but I'd seriously do 2 days Vegas and the rest in San Francisco and maybe Napa, etc.

I went to San Fran for my honeymoon. It was a great time! I would also suggest swapping the time to 3 nights in Vegas and the balance in California, if you really want to see both.
You really don't need more than three nights in Vegas.
Unless your goal is to lose a ton of money.
I know. Problem is that I don't want to drive at all, and I want minimal effort to do anything else.
It's hurricane season down south and FI can only easily get a visa to so many places.
Vegas is just easy and everything is in walking distance.
Do you definitely want to do the west coast? How exciting you're planning!
If you aren't dead set on the west coast, I think New Orleans, Atlanta and Charleston are great options as well that you don't need to drive and are romantic and have great food and things to see.

I went to SF for my honeymoon, in August. It was not hot. In fact, my H complained until I bought him a sweatshirt because he was "freezing." (He gets cold when it's below 70 though so...)
Anyway, despite it being old - @misoangry's blog provided the magical alley of deliciousness, which was near our hotel. Polk street was also a fun few blocks of bars and restaurants. 21st Amendment Brewing Co had great food. The tour of AT&T park was also fun.
We really liked the Grand Hyatt in Union Square, walkable to most things and/or a short ride.
I would skip out on going back to Vegas after you have already been there before you go to SF.
To be honest, I would fly off to San Diego. It's gorgeous down there in August. You can go to the beach and actually get out of wearing a jacket. You go to San Francisco in August, it's going to be cold and foggy, so pack layers.
The no driving parameter makes it tough. No driving at all? Or just no longer-distance driving?
I would rather not. It's more cost and only I can drive. I also don't want to be driving in cities I'm not familiar with.
I'm looking for about 9 days away for less than $3000.
I know I'm being difficult, but this wedding (visa) is already causing me so much damn stress that when it's done I want to just be somewhere and turn off my brain.
We did a week in San Francisco when we got engaged at the end of August 2009. The weather was decent but never truly hot. We wore sweaters in the morning but then were fine with shorts and t-shirts in the afternoon. Light sweaters and pants in the evening.
We never once needed a car to get around - there is really good and fast public transit and we booked on a bus tour to go out into Sonoma valley for a day and to drink wine until we were cooked.
We had restaurant recommendations from a friend but that was 5.5 years ago now so I can't remember any of them. The food was excellent and we had a great time exploring the city. There are many things to do to keep busy and it's the only place DH brings up wanting to go back to since he doesn't think 6 days was enough to really do everything.

You can 'not drive' and stay in San Francisco. Uber, BART, limo tours to Napa, tourist sightseeing buses, bikes ... hell, there's even segway rentals if you want to be totally lazy. Also, SF proper is not hot, but if you go inland a bit, it gets hot fast. Napa/Sonoma could be quite warm, comparatively speaking.
It's not cheap to stay in a hotel in the city, though - I'd expect to pay $200+/night no matter how low your expectations are for hotels. Also, there are plenty of beaches in that area, but the water's not warm nor exceptionally beautiful (ETA: in comparison to tropical-type locations - I think all oceans are beautiful) regardless of the time of year unless you go quite a bit south.
I don't know if I'd want to get on a plane twice during my honeymoon, in addition to the inbound/outbound flights? I'd rather pick one location. I mean...you'll be in your hotel room a lot of the time. Heh.

We can do a flight from Vegas and 3 nights hotel (looks decent) for $370 each.
And here's how I know that the visa needs to arrive soon so I can enjoy planning things. Thinking more in depth about planning a honeymoon is stressing me out.
A lot of effort for something that might not happen.

We did New Orleans without a car. It was fine and easy enough to get around.
Nola in August is hot as balls!
That is true! We were there then but it is hot and humid where we live too. NOLA is better air conditioned though so we were okay. Maybe not good for Canadian, though.
You can take the T everywhere, even to the beach. There's excellent dining, especially if you like Italian. In August it is definitely hot! It's a fun city.
