Not for me. A friend asked my opinion. She's having a sitter in from 3pm-noon tbe next day (two shift workers and a wierd overtime in there.) Two boys aged 1 and 3. Mediocre sleepers.
Normally, they have an overnight sitter from 6pm-6am and they pay her $50 for that (which is nuts to me, seems cheap). It's only once every few months.
She thinks $75-$100 is sufficient for 21 hours of babysitting. I said at a minimum, $125 ($5/hour) but that personally I would pay more.
It's common to pay $5/ PER CHILD here for daycare or $8/hour for two. I realize kids are sleeping for like 8-13 hours of this but I dont think that matters.
$50 is less than one evening out for me, and my children are both sleeping for a large part of that. But I live in HCOL, so what do I know?
I honestly can't remember what we paid for overnight sitting when we last used it, but I feel like it was the sitter full hourly rate during waking hours and half-rate for the hours DD was sleeping.
I would so pay $50 for an overnight sitter in the early months. That's seems like a steal. i don't think $100 is out of the question for normal sleepers but for mediocre sleepers I don't know if that's enough. But your friend sounds like she has more experience in the overnight sitting area.
My thinking jf she pays $50 normally for The overnight, she is now asking for another 9 hours (with both kids awake). I would pay $8/hour for that plus the regular $50 (which I think is too little but if the sitter has agreed to come back it must be ok?)
So I said $125.
It's in her own home too. I would never watch two kids for less than that for almost 24 hours.
Heck I would totally pay that to leave my own. Lol.
That seems crazy cheap to me. I would say $150 is fair.
We are going away for 4 nights, 3 days and paying our sitter $700-$800 (£400 plus a tip). She is watching a 2 year old and 5 year old, they both will most likely sleep through 7pm-7am. She will only have to make very simple meals or reheat what I have left or eat out.
I would expect to pay at least $200 for those 21 hours of sitting. 3pm to noon includes like 10 waking hours, for which I would pay $15/hour, so $150. Add at least $50 to cover the sleeping hours. Or, conversely, $10/hour the whole time she is there, which would still come out to around $200.

When I babysat (5+ years ago, LCOL area), I was paid an hourly rate of $10-15/hr with 1-3 kids various ages for all but 8 hrs of the overnight. That 8 hrs was paid at a flat fee of $75. So in her situation, I would've made $ 205 minimum-$10/hr for 13 hrs + $75 for the 8 "sleeping hours".
