crafters, I have a question about painting on fabric

I need to make a banner. Ny plan is to paint on some type of sturdy fabric and then sew pockets on the top and bottom for long dowels.

Is canvas my best option? What kind of paint? It doesn't need to be rainproof, but I do want it to last a while.

Canvas is pretty sturdy. I'd look at sale fabrics and see what they have that is heavy. You could use almost anything. I'd paint on it with acrylic which will be waterproof when dry.

Is it inside or outside? I used to paint banners in college all the time on sheets.

I don't think it has to be canvas, but any thicker cotton would be ok. I would sew it first.

Thanks guys. I want.the option to use it outside. Its for the mo.s club, so I want to be a tiny bit more "professional" than a sheet, but maybe I'll just look for some thick cheap cotton

You can get like a sturdy outdoor vinyl...but they also sell clear fabric waterproofer if you need it

Could you use a canvas drop cloth?They are pretty sturdy and thick. They are inexpensive at a home improvement store.

Oh I wasn't suggesting a sheet, just that anything really works.

I'd go with an off white canvas or heavy cotton & paint with a few bright acrylics. Keep it simple!

Canvas would be great, but a thicker cotton would be fine too. Muslin has worked well for me for most painted applications, but I've only really used it on framed flats or as larger backdrops.
