We just got back from the dr. Ds1 had a fever (I think virus) earlier in the week and woke up today with a non stop cough. The dr said he's bordering on pneumonia on one side. His ox level was 93. He needed 2 nebulizer treatments and a steroid shot to get it up. Dr said he's def opening up but to watch him closely for the next 48 hrs. If he's not breathing well to being him to the er. I hate this. I sent dh to buy a pulse/ox monitor because I have no idea how to know. He's also now on a steroid, an antibiotic and the nebulizer every 4 hrs.
My kids haven't had pneumonia, but both just got over RSV. As part of the diagnosis they had them both get chest x-rays to rule out pneumonia and those came back negative. They had a lot of coughing and wheezing so we were also really watching their breathing closely.
Our pedi office was very good about scheduling follow up visits for us as much as we wanted to check on them throughout the time they were sick. Does your office have weekend hours where you could take him to get re-checked? It made me feel a lot better to have them check their oxygen levels and listen to their lungs/breathing.
Yes, DS has had it twice Both times I took him to the pedi for cold symptoms, pedi diagnosed a virus. DS didn't recover, cough got worse, went back to the pedi a week or so later and he'd developed pneumonia. We get the same treatments you described. Nebulizer every 4 hours, sometimes oral steroids, and antibiotics.
The good news is, DS is always MUCH BETTER after day 3 of the antibiotics. So they help pretty quickly. My pedi said to keep up with the nebulizer until he's cough-free for 2 days. Which for DS is usually 8-10 days of using the nebulizer.

Did you do nebulizer evey 4 for that long? Dr said to do 4 hours for 2 days, then 6 hrs for 2 days, etc.

My DD had pneumonia at 6 months old. She improved greatly within about 3-4 days. Don't be alarmed if he gets worse before he gets better, KWIM? We did the neb every 4-6 hours while she needed it.
Yes they are open tomorrow so we may do that. Thanks! Were u able to avoid the hospital? So sorry you dealt with that!
Glad to help!
Thankfully we avoided hospital time. Every time they checked their oxygen levels they were 98 or higher, which always surprised me as they sounded awful with the wheezing and it was obvious they were working harder to breath.
One of my twins had it around 5-6 months. He didn't have any of the normal signs. He was extremely fussy, wouldn't settle so took him to the Pedi's assuming it was an ear infection. I took him in and everything appeared fine but the doctor, whom I love, told me he wanted me to send him across the street to the hospital that there was something off especially with his cries. But, my twins were born at 33 weeks and were in the NICU for 5 weeks so that may have played a part.
We go across the street and see a CHOP doctor. She doesn't note anything either but double checks with some tests including a chest xray and low and behold he had a spot on his lung. They admitted him for one night for IV antibiotics and observation. We were discharged the next night. He was on antibiotics for another week or two and the follow-up xray was clear a couple weeks later.
It is scary and am sorry you have to go through it. I hope he feels better soon!

My 18 month old developed a cough out of nowhere and literally after one bad night, I took him to the pedi and they almost sent us to the hospital based on his wheezing. His pulse ox was okay and he responded to the in office breathing treatment so they sent us on our way. He was prescribed an inhaler of albuterol with a spacer and a similar schedule, every four hours the first day, every six hours the second and so on till we were down to as needed.
This was all just last week and he responded immediately to the treatment and was back to normal a few days later so my fx your little one has a similar response. We have his 18 month check Monday and I'm anxious to talk the whole thing over with the doctor we normally see. He was diagnosed with bronchiolitis but the only symptom he ever had was the wheezy cough and the albuterol isn't supposed to help bronchiolitis so I don't know.

Yes, every 4 hours. I wasn't super strict about it, I timed it based on his nap time. He generally got it at wakeup (usually 7am), before nap at 1pm, wakeup from nap at 5pm and bedtime 8pm. Or thereabouts. Obviously follow what your doctor says!

DS1 had it. We did the nebulizer every 4 hours during the day and I don't remember if we woke him up overnight, but I think we did for the first night. He got better pretty quickly and never had to be hospitalized for it. He and DS2 have both been hospitalized for croup, though.
Her oxygen was 93 too but her Dr. considered it borderline so he didn't do Neubulizer. We had to get a chest X-ray though to confirm was going on. Turns out hers was bacterial so she did get a antibiotic.
If it helps it wasn't too hard to know that DDs breathing was weird. It was really labored when she slept and she was sort of puffing if she did something active and would get a cough that sounded like she'd been a 50 year chain smoker. She also complained her chest hurt a lot.
She got a pretty strong antibiotic so she's been pretty tired and crabby as a result. She's up and around and playing/eating again so it's improving. Dr. said it could take 3 weeks to a month to get over it and I believe it.
