DH and I are both going to cut our hair for cancer at some point soon…I am trying to decide if I want to do it before or after having #2…part of me REALLY wants to do it like next week. But another part of me wonders if I want short hair when I have a newborn…
My hair is way more work when it's short. (It's curly/wavy and I either look like a poodle or have to wash and straighten it every day/every other day vs. every 3-4 days when it's long.)
I also chopped a bunch of hair (well, the hairdresser went nuts and cut off 3-4" too much) when DD was 5-6 months old and regretted doing it. Don't make hormonally charged hair decisions.
I can't only do a few inches…the whole point is to cut off for cancer so I have to cut off at least 6 inches, ideally 8 - it looks dry in that one pic but overall it is super heathy. So it's either status quo or short. I have had short before, so I know it is work. I haven't ever had short with a kid before…sigh.
Part of me wants my bangs back, part of me wants long hair, part of me wants short hair…I HATE DECISIONS.
Cut it off and try to work towards only washing twice a week. I've done it recently and combined with it being shorter, it has drastically cut down how much I fuss with my hair AND it looks more put together more of the time since I'm not just throwing it in a pony tail all of the time.
And also, my hair looks like hell when I have a newborn no matter what, whether long or short. Even if you just wash it and let it dry all crazy like with the new baby, it's not like you'll have the ability to care anyway, kwim. I wouldn't let the rationalization that it will be more hassle to make it look good postpartum factor in. Even "easy" to look good styles don't happen. I'm just trying to survive lol.
Oh man, as soon as I had DS, I just wanted to cut all my hair off. It was driving me nuts dangling in his face while nursing and now having him grabbing it all the time. I thought that was a thing? The mom chop?
So for that reason, I say that you should just go for it now!
My hair was super similar to yours. I just chopped it just a bit longer that your pic of the new cut you are considering. I love it and was able to donate my hair as well. I vote do it. I feel and look so much better.

I had mine chopped a week before DS was born and went from that length to above my shoulders. It was shorter than I wanted in order to be able to donate it, and I was quite upset that I couldn't get it in a ponytail. I wanted to be able to get it out of the way when dealing with labor and a newborn. It ended up being no big deal at all and I kind of preferred it that short. It stayed out of my face fairly well and was more manageable with the pregnacy-hormone thickness
