I think I'm just being cheap but am slightly overwhelmed with house related decisions SOOO asking MMM it is.
Option A - Would you put a 4x4 Kallax shelf you already have in between the windows even though it would leave a 2.25" gap (on each side) between the shelf and the windows
Option B - Pay the contractor $400 to have him build these shelves & benches that would fit perfectly and are more aesthetically pleasing.
I love the look of those benches and shelves! $400 seems worth it for that custom look, especially if it is that cute in the end.
I make no promises that my decorating skills are up to that par but I think I will copy her crayon art. And try to find someone to make those window valances (or are those cornices).
Are you planning on staying there for a good long while? If so, definitely pay for what you want!
We plan to stay at least 10 years.
If #2 is a girl this will become her room in about 5 years though.
Definitely option B then. The nice thing about the shelves and bench is that you can basically always use them whether its a playroom, bedroom, etc. Storage is always needed!

They are cornices and you can totally make them yourself! It's super easy. DH and I made one for the old house and he is the least handy person around.
If you can afford it option b. Shelves are Sooo much better than cubes imo. do you have a friend who is handy who could build it? It doesn't look that difficult, even a student at a local cc in carpentry maybe.

It's not that we can't afford it I just hate spending sooo much money at one time. Plus we will be replacing the carpet in here sometime this year.
Our contractor offered to do the 2 tall shelves (which are $400 each at Land of Nod) and the 2 benches for $400 total so it's a great deal considering supplies should be about $200.
Is option B still the best choice if we are going to replace the carpet?

I think this depends on whether they will be actual built ins attached to the wall or just custom shelves sitting on the floor. For built ins I would think you would want to pull out the carpets, have the shelves/benches built in, then put in the new carpet. If they are going to be sitting in the floor then the carpet won't matter and you'll just move them out along with the rest the furniture.
I don't even know where to post an intro here! I was on TK/TN/TB since 2003, mostly local boards. I was m_and_m.

I do so with the understanding that all people should have the right to offer their voice to the chorus whether the result is harmony or dissonance. The worldsong is a colorless dirge without the differences that distinguish us, and it is that difference that should be celebrated not condemned." -Ani Difranco

DUH! Why didn't I think of this?
They will be anchored but not built in so its a non issue
