I don't think it's tacky. But I'm not someone who cares about the dollar amount of a gift.
It sounds like you do nice presents where you got a good deal. I think it would be different if you spent less and purchased things that were cheap looking.
I couldn't tell you anything about any current clothing line for kids.

I don't think it's tacky. I rarely return gifted clothing unless it's too small. Because I'm also cheap, I will probably already have the $1 books, but that's not a big deal. Most of them are really good books.
I like to stock up on toys at Target after Christmas.
Stockpiling sale items is not tacky, it's smart - but I'd try to stick to things that don't require a size , like books.
I agree. I try to stick to items that don't require sizes, like books and toys. I've found some really good deals at the Disney Store when they have their twice annual sale. Clothes are great as long as you're confident it's the right size.
I don't like clothes as gifts. Many children's sizes don't line up with their age and they or their parents could be picky about what they wear. Personally I resell or donate almost all clothing DD is gifted because it's totally NMS or is the wrong size.
