Did anyone transition from BM to a non cows milk? Any recommendations on high calorie and nutrient dense alternatives? I give DD yogurt and cheese, but for some reason cows milk is grossing me out. I may end up just giving it to her anyways but want to see what other food options there are.
I asked my pedi at her 9 mo appt and she was zero help. I've since switched pedis for other reasons and plan to ask the new one soon but I know there have been posts about this on here. Thanks in advance!

Not a specific answer, but my ped said we didn't have to give her much WCM because we fed her so much cheese, cottage cheese and yogurt. She still said we should do around 8 oz a day.

If cows milk grosses you out these should too as the are made from cows milk :-)
If you're nursing, that can meet "milk" needs indefinitely. DD drinks some WCM, but DS didn't really. He drank mostly water when away from me. I went to work FT when he turned 1. Nursing part time also takes the pressure off what you choose as a sub.
Personally, goat milk looked the best as far as alternatives go. If you dislike dairy, that's probably out. I'd offer a variety, but avoid rice and unsweetened almond. They're pretty devoid of nutrition.

I know! It's a totally illogical thing on my part. I fully acknowledge that

We gave 4% goats milk for awhile as ds1 is sensitive to lactose I think. Currently we alternate between coconut milk and almond milk. They lack the fat, but ds1 eats a lot of yogurt and cheese

We do coconut milk (not the pure stuff, but the cartoons from the store) and I just make sure my kids take a vitamin when I remember. Plus they eat a lot of cheese and yogurt.
DD1 had a milk protein allergy that she didn't outgrow until a bit after the age of 1 and we just stuck with the coconut milk. DH and I both are sensitive to straight cow's milk so we just don't keep any in the house.
I'm with @tokenhoser, goat's milk is what will give you the most fat/protein of all the alterna-milks. It's what we drink in the 7602 household since we're lactose-intolerant, but I do want to note that DD has never had large quantities of milk after weaning from breast milk. Our pedi thought she was getting enough calcium/fat from other food sources.
Also, note that goat's milk is pricey as heck and not always in stock, depending on the super market. I keep a can of powdered goat's milk around in case the local stores are out (which is often).

Does lactate free cows milk work if you are lactose intolerant? is it really lactate free? We accidentally bought some the other day (okay DH did) and it didn't taste that different, was just a bit of a sweet after taste?
karinothing, it should. It's what my dad drinks. We're all a bunch of lactose-intolerant types in the 7602 family. I can't give you a good reason why I stopped buying Lactaid myself years and years ago.

Ha, okay. I was just curious if it really worked. I was sort of impressed how much like regular milk it tastes and I LOVE milk so I was all ready to throw things at DH for buying the wrong kind.

Is milk squeezed out of a goat's boob going to be less "icky" then milk squeezed out of a cow's boob?

I am totally the same way. The only time I drink milk is when I'm pregnant. If it makes you feel better, WCM is a really good source of nutrients for growing kids. It's much less necessary for adults and you can get the same nutrition in other sources, it's just harder.

I have the same illogical disgust of cows milk but yogurt is fine with me. DD1 drinks no milk or milk alternatives, but eats lots of yogurt, cheese and kefir. Our pediatrician was okay with it (mostly).

Nope. For me, it's another animals breastt milk that is grossing me out so goat is no better than cow. Although goat cheese is delicious and other diary is not giving me the same issue at all, which is not logical, I know.

At least with the brands I buy, there aren't a lot of the issues with hormones, etc that force the cows to produce more milk. But I'm not super up on what's going on in the non-organic cow's milk world these days, so take this with a grain of salt.

DS is allergic to dairy, so I had to find an alternative. There are tons out there, just depends on what is important to you. For me, it ended up being a combo of soy (unsweetened vanilla) and almond (also unsweetened vanilla). The soy has far more protein than the other alternatives (9grams to 2 in almond) is pretty calorie dense and didn't have a ton of sugar. I know a lot of people are anti-soy due to the possibility of the body reacting to the estrogen like plant make up. I have never had a problem so I tested it out with C. He tend to drink the soy and use the almond for everything else (cereal, baking, Etc).

We do a mix of soy and oat milk (DS has milk protein sensitivity). They are both comperalbe to WCM in calories, fat, and protein. Hemp is up there too. Almond milk and coconut don't even come close, especially for protein. But if your LO is eating a lot of whole milk cheese and yogurt, drinking actual milk is less important.
