I discovered he could do it a few months ago, so 16-17 months? We didn't teach him, our sitter did-she has stairs going up from the main level and keeps the kids off them as a rule but also takes time when she can to teach them how to navigate up/down on their bellies safely juuuust in case someone gets past her (the way her stairs are, they're virtually impossible to gate). I don't encourage AJ to do it at home, but now when we're getting ready to leave if my hands are full I can open the gate and tell him lets go and he will get down on all fours and crawl backwards 'til he gets to the steps. It's adorable
18 months or so with DD on her feet. I taught her. Our steps are hard and I wanted her to do it as safe as possible as quick as possible. She never really did the tummy thing but she pretty much went straight to walking and didn't crawl long either.
DS is 13 months and we've been practicing on his belly. I don't if he just wants to do what his sister does, if we're up and down more or what, but he seems more into it. As soon as he can walk better on his own we'll practice a bit too.

We took our gates down shortly before his second birthday. He'd walk down holding the railing. We have carpeted 1/4 flights so only 6 steps to fall. He's only slipped 3 times, all around 2.5 (growth spurt clumsiness?)
Leo is 20 months and refuses to get himself down the stairs. He wants me to carry him like a "baby".
DD is also 20 months and is this same way! She can't really do them on her own yet, but if she holds my hands she can go down them just fine. She just doesn't want to. She also refuses to try sitting down or on her belly. I've been refusing to carry her down lately and make her practice on her own, and that usually results in a tantrum lol.
My 15 month old whines and won't do it at home. However, I watched her go down on the soft-sided stair things at her little gym class last weekend so I guess she can do it. What's a little brat!
I do set her on her knees and do the motions for her occasionally so she can register what to do. I think she is just very stubborn and wants to do it regular or not at all.
um...she's 15m old. she isn't being a brat.
perhaps soft little stairs at the little gym are far less frightening than a full set of stairs at your house, so try and consider what it might be like from her perspective. also consider it's difficult to navigate stairs going down and she is probably just learning.

okayyyyy. Because I was being TOTALLY serious and I have no clue about how able my kid is and what her fears are. :/
Now, sarcasm aside; I know that she is capable and is clearly limited by fear and the desire to go down forward. I'm not effing stupid.
no one called you stupid. i am not interested in a dramatic back and forth, at all. i haven't had one yet and i don't plan to start now! so let's move on now

Have you never jokingly/affectionately called your child something that would otherwise be mean?

i didn't read it as a joke, it was my mistake. can we be done with this now?
and yes. i called her a hell beast to my h when she whined all day lol
I think he just started last month - so about 17 months - on his stomach? I had been holding his hand before that while he walked down. He also just started walking up the stairs without doing the crawl by holding onto the rail, although I don't think he can or will do all of the steps that way.
