My mom used to do this all the time at ShopRite when I was growing up. Not sure if this was a store specific thing or a relic of 80's/90's customer service. Maybe both.
I'm assuming they don't do it anymore. But someone correct me if I'm wrong because I need my chef's knife sharpened. Stupid spaghetti squash ruining them.
I've never heard of this either. It sounds like something you could have done in the 50s, but I would be surprised if they still did it. My knife sharpener recently retired, but he would sharpen knives on Saturdays at various grocery stores. So I'm thinking that at least that store's meat department doesn't do it.
Ok, google tells me that one of our local stores does do it, only at certain stores though. Interesting. Their FB page says there's a display in the meat dept with knife sharpening sleeves at the stores that offer the service. I'll have to look for it. Thanks for the tip!
Also, I wonder if the meat department employees are careful knife sharpeners. I don't see the grocery store replacing an f'ed up knife. I'll have to ask around and see if anyone else has used this service.
My old butcher used to sharpen my knives, but he was an actual butcher with a freestanding shop and we were regular customers. I asked him where he got his knives sharpened, and he said he did it himself and offered to do mine. Then we moved so I take them to a knife store (and pay) now.

Our Jo-Ann's Fabrics advertises a sharpener who does work a few times a year. I think I am going to do it this year sometime. He does scissors (which is why Jo-ann advertises it) and I have lovely fancy Ginger scissors that will probably need it someday so I want to see if they do a good job on knives first :-)
Are professional knife sharpeners that much better than the home sharpeners?
Are you talking about an electric sharpener at home? If so then yes. Electric sharpeners aren't good for your knives because it grinds it down? I can't remember the exact reason, but it's not good!
On the flip side using a wet stone like professionals do takes skill, and if not done properly can also ruin a knife. But when done right it is super sharp, and stays sharp for longer with proper care.
It's not electric but it's not stone either. I honestly had no clue you could take them to a pro lol.
