so, following the recommendations of too many people on this board, I finally got off my butt (or, more correctly, onto my butt) and started watching the new (I used to watch the older ones, TYVM) Doctor Who and Torchwood.
And, OMIGOD... it's so good. And Torchwood is so good.
I'm nowhere near done (just last night watched the hilarious Gwen pregnant / wedding episode), so don't do the spoilers, 'mkay?
I just want to say that it kind of pisses me off what they are getting away with, sex and language-wise on BBC. I kept hearing "fuck", but I guess my brain kept thinking, "aw, no, they aren't reeeeeeally saying 'fuck"... but they are.
Lordy I love this show. One other thing - - I love Capt. Jack's sexuality. He's gay, he's bi, it doesn't matter, and it doesn't diminish him as a hero, as a leader. It seems like the only gay characters we're allowed to see are like Kurt on Glee. Not that there's anything wrong with effemenate gay men... but when it's the ONLY thing you see, it gets wrong pretty quick.
The shitty thing about Torchwood is that it totally ends with the possibility of later series but RTD doesn't want to do any more so we kind of have a bit of the Firefly effect.
Well I think sexually, it's easy to have sexually open characters who are also aliens. It's harder when they're humans (and American). Also RTD loves exploring sexuality in his programs. Nothings one way or the other but it's also not salacious. It's really quite beautiful and normal.
Normalizing all realms of sexual expression freaks the hell out of middle America.

I tried to watch Torchwood so many times and I couldn't get past the 5th episode of the first season. I adore DW but I just can't get it up for Torchwood.
docdon - I hear you. I was that way but towards DW. I started with Torchwood and was not at all going to watch DW. But the 10th Doctor and I are lovers for life! I love both of those shows.
