I moved a piece of tin roofing that had been left in the yard, and found snakes underneath (surprise!). At least 3, possibly more – it was hard to tell from the tangle. I've seen the same type of snake around the yard a few times last summer.
I'm pretty sure they are Northern Brown Snakes, they look just like this guy:
My picture:
They definitely do not look anything like venomous snakes found in the region, so I think it's pretty cool.
I always wear gloves and try to remember I might turn up something startling when I'm picking things up around the yard (this is common sense, but it only became a habit after the time I picked up a rock and found a black widow underneath... )
I have been bitten by no less than three snakes in this manner, however, so probably don't listen to me. I have zero animal willpower. If I ever suddenly stop posting, it's probably because I've died of snakebite, like I'm on the Oregon Trail.
The herpetology website says they don't bite, but I'm happy to admire from a distance, ha!

Fuck that.
I have anxiety looking at that picture. I would not have been able to handle the surprise of finding them. If I knew they were going to be there it's one thing, but surprise snakes! NOPE!
I listened to an NPR podcast called Invisibilia and they were saying that a likely reason most people are so creeped out by snakes is because we don't really understand how they move. Their quick movement without legs, bones, etc is just so weird.

I like snakes. I used to be pretty good at handling them, but haven't in many years. My H would dieeeeeee a thousand deaths if he came across a tangle of snakes. Lol.

I would have ran for the house. I HATE snakes. My mom has acreage and carries a shovel with her most of the year because nearly every snake out at her place is poisonous.
my mother or someone used to say if you're squeamish don't prod the rubble on the beach. turning over rocks is always a bad idea. lol
That said, I was cleaning out a fire pit lid last fall and found a black widow with a body the size of a grape. It was really cold outside so it was moving slowly, so I picked it up with a stick and took it over to show dh before killing it. He screamed like a little girl.
I love snakes. I had to make a conscious decision whether or not to be scared of snakes because the asshole boys in grade school would pick them up and chase the girls with them. I'm not a fast runner, so I could let them catch me or terrify me, or switch it up and call snakes cool. I eventually learned to really like the creepy buggers.
