DH and I have always wanted to do something like that. I kind of looked to see if anything might work when we moved here, (I gave up after only finding toxic spaces in our price range)and I always say "I could live there.", when we pass buildings that I like. It seems like the abandoned car dealerships and fast food restaurants are a good fit for me. lol

We tried to buy an old grocery store/General store and fix it up, but it needed so much work that we chickened out. I still wish we would have, but then we would have missed out on our amazing neighbors...
There was a century+ old firehouse across the street from my high school (and on a mostly residential street) that someone had turned into a house. My friend always wondered if they kept the fire pole!
Philly has a lot of old churches and stuff that people could buy and fix up.

We did buy a church!
It has been a thousand times harder renovating than we thought it would be. We had to do all new plumbing and electrical. We are redoing the sanctuary into our kitchen/dining room/living room right now. Because the floor was sloped theater style, we've had to level out the floor.
It's been really hard. We're doing the work ourselves and living here, which I don't recommend! Lol It will be worth it when it's done!

It's amazing, but I'm still trying to wrap my head around a 22 year renovation.
I could see it. If we stayed in our house for 22 years (which we might) we'll probably never really be done fussing with it. Our current reno has been a 3+ year process and we're not done. And we haven't even touched the kitchen. Or the basement. And that's just updating a normal house with far far less in the way of fancy finishes and square footage.

And maybe that's all they meant or the article exaggerated. But I think it's different when you already have a functional kitchen or bathroom that just isn't updated vs. living in a building that did not originally have those features.

I love the idea of it. I do not love her choices though.
there was a church someone turned into a home for sale for a long time when we were looking for our current house. it's not in a good location though, but it was really cool. I wish I could find the old listing now

Do you have a blog? I'm primarily an app user so I can't see siggies.
