Yes but I have a galley kitchen in our current house. I personally prefer eating in a seperate room. There are 5 of us when SDs are here, we need space. I prefer to use the dining room and have a sitting area in the eat in part of the kitchen.
I don't have one in this house but I've had one before. We used it all the time. Sometimes for meals but more often for things like board games or puzzles.
Yes. We don't have an eat-in kitchen. If we did and it was big enough to hold a true dining room table, no, I wouldn't want a formal dining room too.
We do host dinners, though, including Thanksgiving, so we would need space for a large table. I think of my DHs house that he grew up in . They had an eat in kitchen w/ a table large enough for the 4 of them, but to truly entertain, they needed a formal dining room.
We have a formal dining room. Anytime we have company over for dinner we eat in there. It's also nice to have an extra table to work on a craft project or do a puzzle with the kids. I do like having a formal dining room even though it's not used all the time. I should also note that I have a separate office and I have an extra bedroom that we turned into a play room so it's not like I'm missing out on having those rooms.

I will say when we had an eat in kitchen we only used the dinning room when we had people over (so maybe twice a month) . But now our eat I kitchen is just a giant counter which works but isn't condisive to talking and such.

Not really. Our dining room table is in our kitchen, I guess. Formal dining rooms are nice, but we use our counters/island when we're hosting large groups, so I like our current set-up.

We eat all our meals in the dining room. I have an eat in kitchen and a kitchen table, but I use it primarily as workspace, as I cook a lot. The kids might have a sandwich or something in the kitchen, but all multi-person meals are in the dining room.
Yes, we have one and use it often. It gets used for parties and formal dinners, plus since we don't have an eat-in kitchen, it gets used anytime we have guests for a meal. But you know you, if you haven't needed one before now and don't think you'd use it, then make the space into something else.
We have a dining room but it isn't "formal". We have an eat in kitchen. Also, we have a big great room that is half a family room and half a dining room. The dining room sits between the family room and the playroom. So we use the table for crafts, working, reading, etc. along with big family dinners. It is nice because it isn't secluded and we use the table constantly. When we had Christmas with our neighbors, the kids were playing on the rug in the family room while we sat at the table. It has a great flow and is a really nice set up.
Yes, and we are starting to use it more. Our kitchen table isn't big enough to fit the 5 of us comfortably so we'll have to start using the dining room when we're all home for dinner. My H is a fireman and not home for meals a few days a week so then I just eat in the kitchen with the kids.
Right now we have a traditional set up of L-shaped living room and dining room with two doorways to the kitchen. Our 10 year plan when we re-do the kitchen is to knock the walls down and put in an island with breakfast bar, so our dining room would no longer be formal, and that's the only table we'd have at all.
If I was building a new house I would go for the open floor plan right off the bat. I like my kitchen and my dining room, but the open space is nice as well.

We have one. We eat every meal there from April to October. The rest of the months we eat in our eat-in kitchen b/c our dining room has 5 floor to ceiling windows and gets a little too cold for our liking during the winter. If we're having lots of people over, we'll sit in there.
However, I have bar stools at the kitchen counter, and we changed an awkward family room right off the kitchen into a dining space when we remodeled, so we do have a pretty big room/space where we eat dinner most nights and for having people over that's not an eat-in kitchen. (There's space in our kitchen for a tiny eat-in table, but I haven't done anything with it since we've got other places to eat.)
We use our dining room every day; our kitchen is open to the dining room and, except for a breakfast bar, there's nowhere else to eat. It's a 50's linoleum table, so not very formal.
We do not. We have an open layout with the kitchen / dining area / living room. If we had a formal dining room I would use it, because DH is often too tempted to flip on the TV a couple nights a week while we eat. I hate that.
Yes, we use it for big family meals and entertaining nights, about once a month. It's great when we have family friendly events as kids can eat in the eat in kitchen and parents in the dining room.
On a daily basis we use it for crafts, etc for the kids. We don't have an expensive dining room set yet so I don't care about it getting ruined. We bought it for $500 about 12 years ago :-).
