We have a formal dining room - we use it for all special meals and for every party we have. DH and I will eat in there alone when we do something like a valentine's day dinner or anniversary dinner. When we have my family over for Sunday dinner (just about every other Sunday) we sit in there. I love it. I love that's not directly open to the kitchen (although there is a doorway between the two). I don't like seeing kitchen mess while I'm entertaining or dining.
We just rebuilt our house a year ago and I I opted for an area right next to the kitchen large enough for a table for 10. Right next to it is our kitchen island that comfortably seats four. I got a nice yet not super dressed up table for the dining area and I have this chttps://www.restorationhardware.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod691017handelier above it. I really love that layout! It suits a nice dinner or just a normal evening meal.

We have a dining room and we eat most of our dinners in it. One of our kitchen table chairs broke (it is a really cool retro metal table from h's grandma). So we currently only have three chairs at the kitchen table and the third side is up against the wall. I eat with the girls there if H isn't home but otherwise it is in the dining room. It isn't particularly fancy and it is a little to small when we have a lot of guests.

This is the layout I'm leaning towards.
Right now our island seats 4 and the table seats 6 so if we people over, I usually set the kids up at the island.

We have a dining room and rarely use it. My H occasionaly uses it as a a desk when working from home but we don't really eat there. I would rather have just an eat in kitchen.

We have a separate dining room and love it. We use it for dining at least once a week if not more, even though it is just DH and I. The dogs know they are not allowed in the DR while people are eating so we can eat in peace without getting the "feed me" stare.
Plus we like to entertain family a couple of times a month so it is great to have space for 10-12 in the DR (plus another 8 in the kitchen if we need it).
Added bonus, it is a big space to spread out when needed that doesn't immediately need to be packed up at meal time. This was handy at tax time.
We use our dining room to eat, but I don't really think of it as a formal space. The breakfast area in the kitchen is set up with an expedit shelf on it's side for the microwave and other storage, and the play kitchen is there. Eventually I'd like to put a big comfy arm chair and end table in place of the play kitchen. Definitely don't need to eating areas right next to each other.
We have a more formal dinning room and use it almost every night. That being said we DO NOT have an eat in kitchen. We have an oak dining room table with 6 chairs.
Our formal dining room is where I have the bar and eventually a sitting area but no dining table. We use the informal dining area for eating or the couches. The informal area is located right off the kitchen and informal livingroom. It's an open concept area and we "live" there mostly. The other living area is supposed to be the formal part but we don't do formal anything.

I had a dining room, and an eat in kitchen in my last house. I lived there >10 years, and I can probably count on both hands the # of times I used the dining room table. I would much rather have a larger great room and kitchen, than waste square footage on a dining room.
