It's terrifying, but no way am I blaming or placing any judgement on the parents. Scary shit happens. They locked the door. I would assume they forgot to lock the back door - that happens to us a lot early into the warm weather because we aren't used to using, and therefore needing to check, the back door. Last summer, I left DD (4) in the living room watching a show on the iPad while I took a shower. She opened the front door, shoved into the locked (but admittedly jacked up) screen hard enough to pop it open, and wandered next door for a play date she had decided she needed to have. Not in a million years did I expect her to do that, and walking out of the shower to find her gone and the door open was terrifying.
I have since added another lock to the screen, up very high.
I mean, the backdoor should have been locked, but what else would someone do? And lots of kids can unlock the door anyway.
This is actually an irrational fear of mine, that a kid would get out and I somehow wouldn't wake up. Since even their bedroom door creaking wakes me, I'm probably okay.
Now, if she was a kid who was a known runner - escape artist kind of kid, then there should absolutely be more barriers between here and the outdoors. I don't have kids w/ that personality but they exist.

We have a sliding door to the backyard. It locks but dd can (and does) open it to let herself out when she wants to play. It hasn't been an issue because she is allowed to play there but not leave the deck. She can't open her bedroom door so it wouldn't be an issue yet but at 4, this could happen. By then we won't be living here or will install something more secure but you don't know it is an issue until something happens the first time.

There's always a first time. My 3.5 year old just figured out how to unlock and open the back door and the security screen door last week while I was busy trying to get shoes on the other two so we could all go outside. Suddenly I heard his little voice saying "Hey! Abby! What are YOU doing in the backyard?!" He had left the door wide open behind him and one of the cats had escaped. I was able to grab her before she really took off, but I was crazy pissed and we had a very serious talk about doors and safety.
DS1 started unlocking doors around 2. He would pull a box or chair up to the deadbolt and open it. We promptly went against code enforcement and changed our deadbolts to key locks. Now I am panicked if there is a fire but I guess I'll work that out.
I set the alarm if I am in the shower because at 4.5 DS1 could get the key off the hook and let himself out of he really wanted.

I agree with ag, there would have been no sloshes for a week at least. I discovered today that my 3yo can and will unlock and open our patio door. The front doors have child locks on then (which will be the death of me in a fire), but she has been able to do the deadbolts for over a year. Add this to the list of reasons why her bedroom door is shut and had a child lock on the handle so she can't get out.
