Also. If he doesn't matter on abortion, why does he matter on the budget? And if it's because the assumption is that Romney would push his pretty conservative slashy budget, why can't the assumption also be that Romney would push his socially conservative view points?
Apparently, you are the only one. But I'm out. It is absolutely infuriating to me that Ryan RYAN is being embraced by people who have tried to paint themselves as social liberals. If I can be enormously disappointed and intellectually honest about the way Obama has let down his constituents on civil liberties issues, conservatives can be honest about what a nut job zealot they have for a VP candidate.
People on this board talk all the time about feeling like the GOP party has been hijacked from them, that the social conservatives are defining the conversation and pushing a "Christian Nation" agenda when the economy should be their priority. And THIS is who is celebrated as a "game changer." Who do you think hijacked your party? It wasn't Lugar. It wasn't Romney. It was this guy.
I am really surprised you cant see past this. You are Catholic, for goodness sake, and can see past their social issues. But, okay.

I think you may have just eloquently put into words why I want to vote 3rd party now. I think both mainstream parties are total disappointments right now.
Speaking for myself only (and I'm not sure that was directed at me), I'm not embracing Ryan. I'm intrigued by the pick and trying to figure out what it means for my vote. Honestly my biggest prevailing thought is that none of it matters because Congress sucks a fat cock. I may end up voting for Obama on judicial appts alone because nothing else will happen. I'm really trying to discuss this from a neutral POV, and that's not dishonest because I'm pretty neutral at the moment with respect to everyone.
Is there a GOP pick that does not have a socially conservative voting record that social liberals are supposed to be rallying for?

Ha! That's kinda where I was going in the other thread.
I am really surprised you cant see past this. You are Catholic, for goodness sake, and can see past their social issues. But, okay.
I don't "see past" their social issues. If you think that, I've been profoundly unclear. I oppose their stance on any number of social issues. I would NEVER have "voted" for this pope, no matter how awesome a homily he gave. But I don't get to vote for pope. I won't leave the US if Romney gets elected and starts pushing a Ryan-agenda, just like I haven't left the Catholic church notwithstanding my opposition to many of the positions of the church. But you also won't find me in a thread about how kickass Ratzinger is talking about how it's complete okay that he thinks convents are a hot bed of feminism just because he has a plan to restore the vatican library.
But you are still Catholic, as am I, and it is inspite of. Maybe "see past" was a poor choice. Okay, it was, but my point still stands about what draws you in...I plan to still vote 3rd party. And, I know you are not just directing this at me but I am answering it, he still intrigues me for his fiscal stance, a stance I still see as why he was chosen. It has been 3 days so this will likely change and my 3rd party vote will likely still stand, but I can see why people are energized by this vote. Hell, even Maddow realizes why, and there is no way she likes him.
I don't get the "men can't have an opinion on this" stuff. Men are just as responsible for a pregnancy as the woman is and the child inside of them is just as much their baby as it is the woman's. Men should be concerned about the issue because it could potentially be their baby that someone wants to abort one day.
I guess I don't see how everyone can be all "it should be fair and equal between the sexes" and then decide that on this issue it shouldn't be fair and equal. Sure, the woman is the one that has to carry the child, but the child doesn't 100% belong to them. When it it your opinion that life begins at conception, I can see why a man would be very concerned about this issue.
I don't have a penis, but I still care about issues that only concern men. I see women on this board talking about how they think circumcision should be illegal. I guess everyone without a penis should just keep their mouth shut about the issue from now on.
I had a baby in January and was diagnosed with post-partum cardio myopathy (a pregnancy-induced form of congestive heart failure) that happens to 1 in 2,000ish women. I still haven't regained normal heart function and possibly never will.
My heart is too weak to have another baby. If I did get pregnant again, I would most likely need a heart transplant or possibly die from cardiac arrest (and that's IF I get better).
Call me selfish, but when my life is on the line, I feel I get to call the shots over my husband.
I think the issue was more a wide range with social conservatives....santorum comes more to mind, IMO. But, again, as I said, his social issues worry me and while he energizes the election, I am not sure he brings me in as an R vote. I won't vote for Obama either ecause, in good conscience, he is failing in education (an area I see as point #1 in breaking the poverty cycle)
