We do breakfast pancakes with a candle on the morning of their actual birthday (though for DD1 this year, might be the day after).
Other than that, party and present. But DH and I were talking about starting a tradition of a fun day of whatever the bday girl wants to do in lieu of a present. I don't know. I'm honestly at a loss for presents. I feel like we have so many toys and the grandparents and friend presents are just going to pile on.
DS has a birthday this coming week - he already had his party so has been very celebrated! So his birthday day will be his choice of activity - I think he has decided on a train ride a few stops away to a small grocery store that sells ice cream pops. He will get to request what he wants for dinner and we will have a cupcake with candles. He will get a small gift from us when he wakes up.

We have kept up with my husband's childhood tradition of a "birthday cereal" - we don't buy sugary cereals regularly, so for their birthday they can pick out any box of cereal they want.

We decorate the living room with streamers and balloons and hang streamers in the doorway from the hallway the night before. They get a special birthday breakfast (usually pancakes) with sprinkles and a candle. They get to pick a family activity and what I make for dinner. They also get a party on the weekend near their birthday. And we typically get them one big present - DS got a scooter this year, DD will get a pedal bike in a few months. Sometimes I also wrap up a few new summer clothes for DD (cute dresses, new swimsuit), and will probably do the same for DS when he starts to care.
They each have a special birthday plate they eat off of. We do a special family activity the day of their birthday. DD's birthday is July 4th so for her we may not always do stuff ON her birthday but we'll still do something special
So far the kids have had joint birthday parties since they are a month apart, so on their actual bday we invite our parents over for dinner and have cupcakes. Just a small special thong just for them. Although my mil told me today.thay she invited my Hs aunt for Ns birthday wed. Which is fine, I guess, but why she did it without asking is annoying.

I haven't heard of the special thong you get for their birthdays... Where do you get that? ?

Well DD will be 2 this Saturday so we are still trying to figure out our traditions. We throw her a birthday party and decorate the living rooms with streamers, balloons, a sign etc. Last year we had birthday party muffins (I'm hoping to find them again this year). I think my favorite tradition that we have done last year and this and will continue to do is, rent the sign outside of a local florist and have them put "happy "#" birthday DD'S name. Then we go and get out pics taken beside of it every year.

Also, its pbk of course. Monogramed gingham. Duh.
Huh. I didn't see that detail posted anywhere on your blog- I even checked the party planning posts, special birthday idea posts, and of course, the birthday party posts.
