I think it sounds adorable and awesome! It's much better than spending a ton of money on A material thing that if you broke up it would have your name written all over it and like you said, you're getting the experience too!
I like the ideas of experiences together! If you want to get him a card and something small to open too, that's sweet. ETA: maybe a fun coffee mug or a tshirt (or sexy undies lol)
The guy I'm dating now had a birthday about 1.5 months after we had our first date and right around the time we decided we were a couple.
He decided to have friends over for drinks and apps, so I was off the hook for dinner and planning for the actual day.
But I did get him a small, unique music related gift to open and a gift certificate to a jazz club. It went over well and I didn't think I was spending too much. Personally I'm not all that big in to gifts and he didn't seem like the type to be big in to gifts, so it worked out well. I also had craft time and made him a card with markers instead of buying a card. He hung it on his fridge
I think your plan sounds great! Does he have any other hobbies that you can get him to go along with that instead of sexy underwear? Just a suggestion!

I think you are on the right track. My birthday ended up coming up first and it was around 6 months in so he took me out of town to a city that was a couple hours away to see a band that I liked and to stay the night in a hotel. That was a memorable experience.
His birthday was after mine and he's one of those people with a birthday around Christmas. We ended up spending his birthday with his family. I gave him a high-quality ($100+) tie in his family's tartan plaid. (He has some Scottish ancestry, Scot + Jew). I figured that he could use it even if we didn't last. No idea what I'll do next time if it is relevant, because it is a while off now. Might be something more fun.

My problem is he has so many things I could buy him that he'd love, but finding something small and inexpensive is trickier! He's particular about his things, too - so if it's something I know he wants, I wouldn't buy it for him unless I knew it was the model he wanted.
I am knitting him a pot holder with a logo of his fave tv show, though. He cooks for me a lot, so it is something he'll use lol. He's nerdy and I know he'll love it. I forgot to mention that in the OP.
Pot holder is a great idea! I might have to steal that idea cause the guy I'm dating also cooks a lot. I completely know what you mean about him being picky about his stuff. I found my guys gift on uncommongoods.com and it went over really well. I think it was only $20 plus shipping.
I think everything you have is great, but if you want something a little more, I think a tshirt is a good idea. He seems to wear tshirt a with nerdy things on them, and I love finding shirts that are nerdy, but not overtly so, if you know what I mean...something fandom would recognize. But I think you are pretty set. Plus he has the best gift ever, you by his side!
