Our current mattress is about 16 years old, and while it's not horrible, there are some nights when I feel like I just can't get comfortable. Anyhow, it's due for a replacement. Honestly, when I bought it, I put so little thought and effort into it. Basically, I sat/bounced on a few mattresses that were in my budget and then said, "Uh, sure, that one."
Now that I'm older (and have a few more aches and pains popping up) and have a larger budget, I want to do this right, but the array of available mattresses seems daunting! Anyone have a mattress they love they want to tell me about? What do you love about it? Do you have any mattress shopping advice?
I've thought about a Tempurpedic one--I have lay on those a couple of times and found them very comfortable, but I've also heard people say that they don't like them over the long term. Plus, they're expensive. I feel like it's so hard to get an idea when you're on something for a little while in the store versus all night, night after night. For that reason, I've also thought of a Sleep Number one, not because H and I have vastly different ideas of what is comfortable, but because, in a way, it would allow me not to commit to a single idea of comfort.

(chiming in late)
We had an old mattress for years and finally bought a Sleep Number bed in November. I really love it, especially the ability to adjust to more soft/firm when needed plus it has the anti-snore option for me to raise the head part of the H's side when he starts up with the loud snoring. The only bad things on ours is since we got the flex-top mattress (where the head can raise up individually for each side of the bed), we had to buy their brand of sheets to fit, but they did give us a discount deal since we had a coupon for it at the time we bought the bed.
My parents have a tempurpedic and they do like it a lot but they said it did take a while to get used to it. When my mom had her back surgery, she couldn't sleep on it at all and had to sleep in another room because it was not comfortable to her, but now that she's fully recovered she is back to sleeping on it.

We bought a BeautyRest ComforPedic last spring. H has always like super soft beds, but in our old bed I found my hips sagging. So for that reason and because they say memory foam mattresses breakdown over time and become softer, we went with a firmer bed. H loves our bed now. The only issue I've run into is that, as a side sleeper, the firmness doesn't allow my shoulder to sink in as far, so I had to buy a super thick pillow to support my neck.
