You have to consider that your kid might have done it himself, or that there is some other explanation for it entirely which does not involve the friend. Kids this age have remarkable fantasy lives, lol
Sure it's possible but I don't think it's likely. DS is very fastidious about neatness and cleanliness by nature. He would have been pretty upset if he had done it himself; guaranteed tears.
Anyway, it's beside the point, because as I said before, my main concern is that scissors were available unsupervised and the teacher made no mention of what happened to me.
Aren't scissors that can cut through fabric super sharp and shouldn't be used by a 3 year old to begin with?
I just looked at the scissors he has at home, and, like lala said, they have a blunt tip but sharp blades. It would be pretty easy to get through the sleeve of his shirt by just pinching the fabric and then cutting.
Maybe my FFC should be that I never supervised scissor use at home. The schools my kids went to always had the available in an art center especially at 4.
My point being that people are all zomg this teacher sucks when I could totally see it happening.
It's a class of 3 and 4 year olds...who are obviously lacking in impulse control :?
So the kids were 3 and 4?
Yes. And to clarify, I certainly don't think the teacher sucks based on this one minor incident (not sure if you were referring to me). But I do expect a better understanding of what happened and how it was handled, which is why I am going to approach her before school tomorrow.

Like I said I don't think there is anything wrong with asking at all. Let us know how it goes.
I am not saying it couldn't happen. But provided the kid is telling the truth (which is the first thing I would be trying to figure out), the kid either somehow got scissors to lunch and damaged another kid's property unnoticed (which could also easily happen) or someone did no and didn't say anything, which I think is odd.
I find it hard to believe that in this crazy CYA world that doesn't fall under the list of things you are suppose to disclose to parents.

Eh she said it probably wasn't even at lunch. I agree if the teacher knew about it she should have said something. But if she didn't I don't think it's some huge deal.
To add. DD had a kid tell her he was going to kill her and nothing came of it. I think we just hear over the top stories on the news. Most schools are not as bad with stuff as the media portrays. Shocking I know.

Yes but it's different when you only have two kids and know their abilities. I'm sorry I don't think 3s as a group can be trusted to act appropriately around sharp objects.
Am I the only one that thinks this mole hill has become a mountain?
I don't think questioning a kids teacher when your child comes home and says their friend cut a hole in their shirt with scissors is making a mountain out of a mole hill.

I am really surprised people do.
I mean, I would assume the teacher didn't know. I would not care about the shirt or the kid getting in trouble -- it's typical kid nonsense.
It's not like a damn teacher conference. 'Hi, Miss Sally. Jimmy told me a classmate cut his shirt yesterday with scissors. I have no clue how it really went down, but I had't heard anything so I just wanted to check in and make sure Jimmy was giving me the full story."
You honest to god think every three year old you've ever met can be left unsupervised with scissors no problem?
No but I think it's ridiculous to jump to the conclusion that this teacher somehow is royally fucked up in her supervision because some kid got a pair of scissors and cut another's shirt. I mean this could have been during a cutting activity and the teacher turned her back for 15 seconds to button suzys pants. But no couldn't be that. Instead this teacher is obviously lacking in supervision. The jumps are ridiculous.
Maybe I am just used to responsible teachers who report out well? IDK.
DS1 went on a nature walk, jumped in a pile of leaves, and landed on some dog shit. The first thing the told me when I picked him up is WTF happend to his clothes.
My guess about what happened -- the teacher didn't know even though the kid though she did, and probably would want to know.
Also, FWIW, I totally know someone whose granddaughter got stabbed in the hand with scissors by a classmate.
She also said it could have been before or after lunch because kids suck at time.
So that is why you ask, right?
I said I have no issue with her asking. I have issue with the fact we are jumping to the this teacher sucks at supervision! I said several times if she wants to ask go for it.

Generally in preschools there is roughly a 5:1 ratio so if the teacher turned away there are two other sets of eyes on the kids in a class of 15ish. I would side eye--that doesn't mean I think she should pull her kid out of school and try to get the teacher fired ffs.

Every preschool my kid has been in has been an 8:1 at 3 and 10:1 at 4 yes I can imagine how a teacher could turn her back for the 10 seconds it takes for a kid to cut another's shirt. Must be eye roll worthy lacking supervision.
There are 12 kids in Gs class and I would still mention it to the teacher if he came home with cut clothes. 5:1 in Gen ed preschool? That sounds unusual.

Wow! 8:1 are pretty much the bare bones minimum places have to have to operate here. You have to be 6:1 to be naeyc accredited.

Huh, we didn't tour a school with a ratio over 6:1...and we couldn't afford the high end private preschools here. As usual my mind is blown over regional differences.

You will not find a 6:1 here unless you are looking at the toddler classes. We have never had a problem with the ratios. Last year DS was 11:1. I think it was a great preparation for kinder at 22:1.
