I know a local school that is implementing a uniform for next year. They don't call it a uniform, but it is. Mostly just reinforcing the length of shorts and making them wear specific colored polos. All the specifics haven't been finalized, but there will definitely be some kind of uniform. Some parents are up in arms. "We didn't get a say" etc.
How would you feel. It's a public school, which is another argument. But it's not like there aren't public schools with uniforms in the area
Just trying to gauge how other people feel about the issue.
I'm a huge proponent of uniforms in schools for many reasons. Part is the equalizing factor, but more important to me is the respect issue. Going to school is a kids job. Just like when they are adults they need to take it seriously and dress appropriately. Uniforms and dress codes help enforce that idea.
Of course I grew up with a uniform so that skews my view.
As long as the clothing items are easy to obtain, reasonably priced, and there are programs in place to help low income families, I am all for uniforms.

Yeah, exactly. I wish my kids had to wear uniforms.
I think parents are always going to find a reason to be mad about something.
I'm ok with uniforms, and in this case it seems even easier bc they're not making them buy a particular uniform, but following strict guidelines. And I like how devonpow put it about it being the kids' job. I tell the boys all the time that school is their job, so it's the most important thing they need to focus on.

I think Js future kinder is a kahki and blue polo type uniform school. I'm happy about that. One, not having to deal with buying a bunch of school clothes, and two, I like the equalizing factor.

I went to a JHS that had a "uniform." We had to wear a white shirt with black pants, no logos bigger than 2inches and no short skirts. I felt like a lot of kids spent time trying to push the limits of what was acceptable.

We have a dress code of khaki's or navy blue on the bottom and red, navy, light blue, or white on top unless it's a school shirt. They don't have to be polos just the color. I love it. Makes it so easy everyday because there is little room for negotiation or fights.
Yes. There are other schools in the district that have the same though. It's mainly because the school is becoming I.B and is trying to be a bit more professional. And not have to deal with as many distraction

We also have a wide income gap in our community and I'm pro-uniform largely for that reason. We have two local elementary schools and the one we're zoned for doesn't do uniforms - I hope that changes!
The idea of uniforms doesn't bother me at all. I do wish the community had been involved, though.
They were somewhat. We had a small committee, it was discussed during PTA and IB meetings. But it certainly wasn't everyone.
OHHHHH, OK now I get it. People are complaining because the people in charge didn't come knocking at their doors actually asking THEM PERSONAL PERMISSION to do it. LOL, people love complaining!

Abby had uniforms at her public school for K and first and I thought it was great. The annoying part was when parents wouldn't follow it and we had to explain to Abby why she had to follow the rules when other people didn't.
This was in a low-income area, and they had a school "store" where parents were encouraged to donate their kids' old uniforms so parents could have another way of getting them. The dress code was just dark blue pants/shorts/skirts with white or light blue tops and dark blue socks. Fairly easy to get.

I'm all for the uniforms.
Exactly. It came about when a survey went home basically saying "we're doing this, help us with the minute details"
I like uniforms. I'm not sure how I feel about them for high school. Clothing is also a big part of self expression for some. It definitely was for me.
