DH was the alternate juror on a civil case a few weeks back. They found in favor of the plaintiff, but since he was just the alternate he wasn't a part of deliberations.
Since the case ended, he's been contacted by the plaintiff attorney who offered to take him to lunch to get his thoughts on the case, received a thank you letter from the judge, and now an insurance investigator from the defense just knocked on our door.
The first two don't bother me at all, the last one is what really annoys me. How normal is all this? The case is over, he didn't deliberate. Leave us alone! And don't knock on my door in the middle of the day while I'm holding my sleeping baby, and make eye contact through the open window. I shushed him when he talked loudly, lol.
It is not uncommon for attorneys to reach out to jurors to get their perspectives, particularly if they lost.
In many cases, the plaintiff lawyers don't get paid unless they win. Their clients have invested a lot of time and energy and are likely emotionally drained and hurting. Getting feedback from jurors on why they lost can be exceptionally helpful both as a business strategy and to better help clients in the future.
It also happens when the losing attorney suspects foul play or unethical behavior from the winning side. The only way to know for sure though is to contact the jurors.
I work for an insurance company and handle litigation files and have NO idea why they would be contacting you. I almost would like your DH to find out because I'm so curious.
No one contacted me after the verdict was announced. The lawyers did talk with a few other jurors before they left the courthouse but that was it. I'd complain to the judge. The insurance guy coming to your house is creepy.
