He was playing in a big ball tournament Saturday morning, stepped back to make a play at 1st base, and he said it felt like someone stepped on his heel. We went to the ER and it's a partial Achilles tear. He needs to see an orthopedist today or tomorrow. Right now he's in a fiberglass cast, wrapped in Ace bandages, and on crutches. And it's his right foot so he can't drive.
The next few months are going to suck so hard. Does anyone have any insight into this injury? We're assuming he'll have surgery at some point...
He might not need surgery if it's a partial tear, but the rehab won't be a picnic. He may be immobilized for a while- walking boot or cast-. Tell him to follow the protocol and not slack off with the rehab. Ice ice ice will help to control the inflammation and pain a bit. Sorry that happened. It sucks.
I've never torn my Achilles, but I feel qualified discussing anything related to the human ankle and its various injuries.
I will keep my fingers crossed that the tear isn't bad enough to require surgery. If it comes to that, I will let you know all my favorite recovery tricks.
I was always told to ice my knee while in a cast. Not the back of the knee, there is a sensitive nerve back there, but the top of the knee. It worked surprisingly well if I kept my ankle elevated while doing it.
