I mentioned last night that DD had come home from school with a fever. They told me when they took her temp during lunch it was 102. I took it when I got her home and it was 101. It hasn't gone higher than 101 that I've taken it. However, she is really mopey and tired. She napped a lot yesterday. However, she is eating (a little bit but enough that I'm not worried) and she is drinking and she did sleep through the night. My MIL texted me from her vacation in Aruba to ask how she felt and when I said she's ok, she still feels warm and sluggish she immediately said "you should take her to the DR" Am I the crazy one that doesn't run there? Don't get me wrong, I will call the nurse line etc...but my MIL always acts like I am nuts bc I don't run to the DR as soon as they sneeze. (FTR she and my SIL take my niece to the "walk in clinic" instead of the pediatrician anytime her nose runs so he can prescribe something, they say it's more convenient to go to the walk in but I know it's because the pedi isn't script happy...I think that's insane)
I just feel like she's eating, drinking and sleeping...she's sick. It has to run it's course...if she stays like this for more than a couple of days I will take the next step but I hate bringing a kid who's immune system is already run down (hence they are sick) to a drs office full of other germs.
I'm with you! And what kind of Rxs are they getting for colds? Dude, those things just need to run their course. What is wrong with people? Do I like it when my kids have fevers? No, but it is just their bodies fighting off infection. I am more concerned with how they are acting and if they are hydrated.
I am with you on this one. I don't take my kids to the doctor often at all. DD is coughing a lot and has a stuffy nose. It's a cold and she will be fine in a few days. There is no need to go to the doctor. I also hate giving my kids medicine.
No, unless they aren't drinking, the fever is more than 3 days or not responding to meds or raging sore throat. DS1 gets "mystery fevers" every so often. No other symptoms beyond a 101-102 fever for a day or two and then his body fights it off and he's good.
Nope I never even call the nurse line. Kids get sick. I have one that has febrile seizures but they are caused by a rapid spike in temp so even that wouldn't make me call.
I wouldn't do anything, even call the nurse line, for what you've described. Especially since it hasn't even been 24 hours.
This. For what you've described I wouldn't have even thought to call Dr. My dad is a Dr. (not pedi) and I wouldn't have even mentioned it to him yet...usually I have him check DS's ears throat etc before making a pedi call.

This is me too. If I'm concerned, I'll check the pedi's website for suggestions. They have a symptom list with when to call the doctor guidelines. It has the same info the nurse would give me.
I agree with pps. Ds was sick all day yesterday with a fever too and I just let him snuggle, lay around and have ice cream and plenty of water. right now he is still asleep (he is usually up by now) but it's like you said, it has to run its course and your dd prob needs rest and fluids more than anything. You're doing the right thing by letting her recoup and monitoring.
And wtf with your mil and the walk in clinic visits? Oy!
Thank you everyone. I needed some reassurance that I wasn't the crazy one. I feel like I have called the nurse enough in the past that I know what she is going to say for the symptoms DD shows. If something were to be different, I can understand that would warrant a call.

I have done maybe 8 sick visits between both kids in their lives. Each kid has had two doses of antibiotics in their lives. I've called twice--once when ds had a 105 temp after hours and when dd had a seizure.
I'm the queen of calling the pedi's nurse line to see if we should come in or how to treat. As soon as I say "hi I just have a question...." they say "hi Mrs. QueSyrah." Lol
Nah, not big on going to the doc all the time. My girls are 4.5 and 2.5, and we've had 2 sick visits so far. I call the nurse line when they have anything more than a cold though, just to make sure we're doing what we need to.
I find that I call the pedi nurse for everything because my kids are masters at presenting with unusual symptoms. The last time DS1 had strep he was complaining of a headache and said his throat hurt when he swallowed. He never had a fever, his throat looked normal, and the doctor was shocked when his strep test came back positive.
For you I would give it a few days and maybe call if nothing changes.

As a rule, I wait this stuff out as much as possible, but someone I know just lost their three year old son in his sleep following a fever that seemed to have subsided, so my paranoia has been ratcheted up and I might call.

I can count on one hand the number of sick visits I have had with both kids combined. That being said, my kids rarely get fevers -- maybe twice for both of them -- so I do call when that happens just to run down the symptoms with the nurse.
Honestly multiple days of 101 or 102 would prompt me to make a follow up call to make sure, just because in my 4.5 years of parenthood that has never happened before.

Honestly if they're sick enough to be sent home from daycare or school I generally take them in because I can't stay home for 3 days to see if they get better and have it end up being bacterial. My kids rarely get fevers so if they do I know something is wrong. I dont see anything wrong with going in, I pay for it and we go. I'm going in more with my dd2 because I want any ear infection recorded because I don't want to end up with a 2.5 yo that can't hear again.
But, DD has asthma. Stuff escalates quickly. I can count on one hand how many times she has gotten over a cold or virus by herself. She will get sick and then it turns into a sinus infection. I used to wait at least 7-10 days. Now I go in at the first sign of an infection. Cough and high fever for more than a day always means sinus infection here. No sense in waiting since my gut hasn't been wrong yet.
We were just at the pedi yesterday . 103.3 fever, yellow nose, cough. Sinus infection #3 of the year. The first 2 started as the flu and pinkeye. This one is allergy induced.
I only really go if I suspect an ear infection, a cold that hasn't cleared up after a minimum of 14 days, respiratory issues (such as coughing, wheezing, red throat, etc., as DS has had Croup 3x...), and a fever over 104.
Even that being said, our pedi rarely prescribes meds.
minismama how is your dd today? Hope she is feeling better!
Ds slept late and woke up fever free and back to normal today. So weird.
Anyways thinking of you guys
Glad your DS is feeling better. I thought Mini was on the upswing but then this afternoon she started to get hot and feel sickly again. And now DS has a runny nose. Awesome being as we are going out of town next week .. Hopefully everyone starts to feel better soon. Thanks for thinking of us!
I go because if my kids get sick it is either an ear infection, strep or a UTI generally. Or that time I took him because I thought he had diabetes and he did...yeah, we go to the doctor a lot.
