Here's why you should reserve your flip-flops for the beach, pool, spa, and shared showers — and keep your feet out of them, otherwise, according to Dr. Jackie Sutera, DPM, a podiatrist and spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association.
1. They expose your feet to bacteria, viral, and fungal infections.
Because beaches and community pools NEVER EVER have bacteria.

My flip flops have more arch support than the rest of my shoes. Also, leather or fabric flip flops have never given me blisters and have no BPA or latex in them.
Lol. Sorry if I question your science, Cosmopolitan. Tell me again how to fit ice cubes AND balls in my mouth at the same time. Then who cares if I have hammer toes and athlete's foot??
I'm not putting too much faith in an article where the authors / editors confuse exacerbate with exasperate anyway. But, yeah. Cosmo is a piece of shit publication for so many reasons, not the least of which is their insistence that humming wih a ballsack and Altoid in my mouth is going to blow my SO's mind.
I hate to be a downer but my flip flops really made my bunion worse on my right foot last summer. Now my 2nd toe is starting to curve funny, my bunion is worse and my range of motion in my toes is worse. I have no choice but to blame my $80 vionics. The cheap ones from target never fucked up my feet like that.
I went to Disney for a week in summer when I was 20 weeks pregnant armed with a variety of shoes. My thick foam flip flops win at life. Zero pain or any issues at all. I can't wear those super thin plastic strap ones but my thick foam, fabric strap ones are amazing.
Not necessarily the flats, but the wedges. The instability of your foot when walking, the increased likelihood of tripping and rolling your ankles because your foot placement is off balanced, and the damage to your feet and ankles over time.
Ok, I was thinking flat espadrilles. Wedges make more sense. The only danger of wearing flat espadrilles is looking like every single fashion blogger or instagrammer with their insanely expensive Chanel espadrilles.
Almost all of these are spot on for me. I once went barefoot at a music festie because my flip flops tore the inside of my toes up (I was not the only one, either)
