The river walk downtown is very lovely and very overlooked. You can grab lunch to go from Fox & Obel or somewhere like that and eat lunch inf front of Centennial Fountain.
Restaurants: Carnivale, Three Aces (little italy), Frontera Grill she should start making reservations for the places she wants to go
Bars/lounges: Violet Hour (wicker park/bucktown), The Aviary ($$$) Honestly one of my favorites if the weather is nice is to go to a casual restaurant down by the lake for an outdoor drink and food: OBriens on the River Walk - tasty mojito Friendship on the lake - right next to a big marina

What's her style? Low-key? Trendy? Is she going with girlfriends or a s/o?
Some trendy/popular restaurants right now are Paris Club (which is the restaurant's name. The rooftop bar is called Studio Paris, but can be hard to get into/expensive) Mercadito, Tavernita, Frontera Grill (for a casual Rick Bayless restaurant, check out XOXO)Avec, Sunda, Hub 51, RPM Italian (Guiliana Rancic's--or whatever her name is from E!- restaurant), Sushi Samba.
Quartino's has pretty good Italian food for big groups. I also like going here when it's hard to get people to agree on a place.
Picolo Sogno has a nice outdoor patio.
Ditto PP's suggestion of the Violet Hour and Aviary. The rooftop at The Wit is popular, too, but usually has a wait (there are plenty of other rooftop bars in the city though...)
If you go to Wicker Park for Violet Hour, restaurants like Hot Chocolate, Lillys Q, and Big Star have good food, too!
South Loop? She should hit up Bongo Room for breakfast Three Aces is pretty close to the south loop and one of my favorite casual restaurants in the city.
