You still have to rough up the surface with a medium grit sandpaper. You need a formula for resin. It has been several years since I last painted the wicker, it needs a fresh coat.

mrs.jacinthe, did you rough the surface when you used the Rustoleum? How was the surface texture once you were finished? Did it hold up well or flake at all?
I have two chairs like this that I want to help better match the new ones I bought. I'm not worried about a solid finish but want to go more brown with a red undertone. I found the perfect Rustoleum color, hopefully can look at Krylon tonight as well.

Nope. Cleaned it with TSP and then sprayed it. I didn't even put on a poly coat (which I usually do). It's holding up fine - I painted a plastic side table that we use on the porch to hold drinks and such. We've sprayed it with the hose to clean it, spilled drinks on it, etc and so far there's no flaking (it's been a year). The finish is pretty smooth - I'm not the best at spray painting so there are a few obvious ooops-es, but it's otherwise a pretty good choice.
With chairs with detail like that, you're going to need more paint than you think. I'd expect 2-3 cans per chair. Just so you know.

I know, I think I'll be lucky if it's only 2-3. I found darker side chairs but still not sure they match the best and they are more expensive. So if either be putting the money into more expensive side chairs or the spray paint.
Thought I would update on this project. I power washed and went for it. I used Rustoleum instead if Krylon bc there was no color choices there I found the Krylon.
I painted them a Metallic Rust and am very happy so far. It is not sticky to the touch at all and only took 1.5 cans for each chair.
I bought a cover for the whole table do hopefully that keeps them holding up as well. Thanks for your advice!
