I was underwhelmed. Boooooring. Don't care about Diana whateverhername is. Don't care about Joan's new dude. Don't care about them being absorbed by another firm...again. yawn.
Only things I liked were Peggy telling Stan about her child, Pete and Trudy, and Pete and Peggy. Oh and seeing Dawn again. Could have done without everything else.
I loved Peggy talking about her baby with Stan. Ken was amazing as a client. We got to see Trudy and I liked that part. We saw them fight for their company again. And the ending - with the employees walking away - was soon good.

Stan (heart) I love the scenes with he and Peggy.
I also enjoyed the Pete/Trudy stuff.
But yeah, I was like meh about this episode. Doesn't Don have the uncanny ability to pick up women wherever he goes? if he is lonely, he couldn't have found a woman at the bar? Its odd.
I feel like I am going to rage if this series ends up with Joan packing up and moving to CA to be with that guy. I mean, really?
This episode felt more like a mid season episode of any other season. NOT one of the final episodes of a series, KWIM?

Yeah but I think a theme of this episode is that Don is losing his touch. Not just with women, but with people in general. Nobody is listening to him anymore.

Yes! Exactly. He can't even finish his presentation at McCann. The employees walk away when they are trying to make the announcement. He is left at a bar, can't pick up a woman, then goes to her apartment and finds two gay guys there as she has left town.
At least this one moved the plot forward so we have an idea where this all might end up.

but....I mean....we get it. Don is a sad human being. I guess my complaint is with how they divided up the season in this way and have forced Weiner to kind of force some of these plotlines and the wrap up.

Agree with all of this.
I thought it was a great episode. My only complaint is the same as it's been every episode--why do they bother showing us previews?
Mad Men Previews:
"What?"
"I didn't know that."
"No."
"Well, there's nothing I can do..."
"Yes."
Just stop it already.
I agree with this! The clips from next week are SOOO pointless and annoying.
I got pissed off because my DVR didn't record the clips from next week's GoT. Those are actually meaningful. These mad men one are useless.

There used to be a kind of parody Facebook recap of episodes a few seasons ago, they were hilarious. They always ended with the previews kinda like yours above. Once once character just said "Poop!" Now every time we watch Mad Men previews we say "Poop!"
In actuality, I've heard its Weiner's way of being a dick 'cause he doesn't want to do previews but AMC makes him.
I really hope he is. Otherwise, their relationship has been something straight out of a sitcom or romantic comedy. So cliche and not what I expect from Mad Men.
Did you notice that when he called to his secretary to set up a flight to NY while on the phone with Joan, no one answered?

Yes something is definitely off. This won't end well for Joan.

I agree with this, I think they could have done better with a real season.
I thought this one was better. There was movement, and some great parts. I liked the idea of another caper, but the twist of not being able to pull it off for once. Lots of call backs in that storyline. I loved Roger grabbing (Don's) bottle of Smirnoff to go save the agency. The Peggy/Stan stuff was good, if a little heavy handed.
Don Draper, without his women, his stuff, his apartment, his agency.

Yes, I was thinking how the previews are even worse by comparison after watching GoT previews, but I didn't want to play preview favorites lol.
Eta - I know I'm in the minority with this but I don't think anything is wrong with Joan's beau. He was definitely an ass about the Kevin thing but I'm going to overlook it as strike one. Another one, I will be anti-him (I don't know his name, don't care, tbh).
I think all the hate/con artist speculation is a 2015 eye reacting to his costuming

What? No, he is very manipulative and strange in every scene.
Y'all are scaring me with the Joan dude. I don't get sketchy from him. IS MY BULLSHIT METER BROKEN?! I am still out here in these dating streets I can't have a broken BS meter!
I thought the calling to his "secretary" in the second, empty room this episode was suspect.
I thought the whole way they met last week was fake and his fit/make up flowers about her child seemed very manipulative. She is a wealthy woman at a firm we know has had press.

I'm not getting sketchy and I side eye everyone and everything.
The only red flags I see that people might be seeing are:
He's super into her. Okay, it's Joan. Everyone who sees her is super into her.
He's moving fast. See above.
He's old as hell. See Roger.
He made the Kevin remark. That was his strike, but he cleaned it up quickly and he got back on the good foot. I'm not going to hold that against him unless he does something else. I also know people think he might be a con artist, but I don't think so. In fact, I think..."he got money."
You shoulda never gave me money (vine embedding info lol).
I think he had money but isn't successful any more. If he isn't straight conning her out of her money, I think he is rushing into things so he can marry back into money.

He's retired and he still has an office and an assistant (I don't think she responded, because what was there to say? "Okay"?). He is going to hop up and buy a place in Greenwich Village and he was buying a day of LAX-JFK/LGA plane ticket in 1970. "He got money."
In the show, secretaries always respond. That's why it stood out that her office seems dim and silent.
He didn't actually buy the place though. And he might have some money and be willing to spend it to lure her in but maybe not money like she has. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think them riding off in the sunset together makes any more sense.
I am starting to feel like they don't know how to end the show.
So they made everyone richer than rich, and now they are taking away their work autonomy and we are supposed to...care? Boo hoo. I kind of don't care. You aren't scrappy anymore (an aside - what I really don't get is how they could go from barely paying their bills to a buyout worth millions of dollars, but thats beside the point I guess). This is starting to feel like the last season of Roseanne when they won the lottery.
I don't know. I'm just cranky about the whole thing. We waited a year for this and so far it sucks.
I loved this episode. The AV Club has been killing it with their analysis the past couple of episodes. If you didn't like the episode go read it and watch again. Even Slate had a good analysis up this morning and they never do!
I both love and hate how metaphorical MW is going with this. They are literally out of Time and Life. RIP Sterling Cooper. RIP Mad Men.
The episode was directed by the actor who played Lane Pryce, so he got to come back and close out the story in a sense. There's a lot of affection between the actors and the characters and I love seeing it translate that way.
Does anyone think maybe Diana never existed? So he starts off seeing her and thinks he knows her from somewhere, which I thought just meant she was his type, but he can't stop trying to place her. She's done EXACTLY what he would do. She's "Don Drapered" her life and doesn't want a huge thing with him. Then she isn't in her apartment, and the gay dudes living them are like, "Oh yeah, someone lived here and the landlord said to sell her furniture." They don't even know who she was.
I think he fantasized her. And I typically wouldn't go for that storyline, but Mad Men has done it before with the pool death in CA when everyone is on drugs, and then with the time he violently murdered the woman in his apartment.
Or maybe I'm crazy.
I thought about this too and couldn't remember if she interacted with anyone else...but Roger did talk to her about the book she was carrying.
I've been reading Tom and Lorenzo even before they started doing Mad Men reviews (when it was mainly just Project Runway) and I am completely honest when I say I will miss their synopses/Mad Style more than actual Mad Men.
I just sit at my computer hitting F5 every Monday and Wednesday.
