It's the law to card everyone in the party in some states. I used to work at a store that sold alcohol and one of my coworkers got fined $1000 for improperly carding someone and was threatened with potential jail time. I suspect your cashier is worried about that possibility and thus is being a hardass.
I used to work at a grocery store and it was policy to card everyone in the party that looked 40 and younger unless an obvious familial connection existed (i.e. parent with a teenager). Management and the local police would send in test "customers" every so often to check us out.
I can't remember if it happens at the grocery store (you can only buy beer there) but it definitely happens at the package store (where you buy booze, wine, beer).

So if you're shopping with your kid, and they would get carded and be guilty of being underage, should you leave them in the car, would you then get in trouble for leaving them in the car?
