This has happened to us twice at our grocery store. Is it normal? FWIW, same cashier both times. Never a problem with any other cashiers.
Count and Husband are buying alcohol (once a tiny single serve carton for cooking and once a 6-pack of Corona).
Husband puts alcohol on conveyor belt and cashier says "I need your IDs please". Husband passes ID and I do not because I never bring my purse into the grocery store.
Cashier: "sorry, I need both because I already asked for both"
Husband: "She doesn't have hers on her. Can I have it back and I will go pay at another cashier alone?"
Cashier: "no, I can't hand it back to you"
Then, husband has to go back to where the product was found, get another, and pay in another aisle.
Normal, or no? Why does she always ask for both? What about parents shopping with their teens?
Either way, it's annoying. Just ask the person who is touching the alcohol and paying for it with his card.

Weird. I've never had an issue where both H and I were carded in a grocery store, they've only needed to see one card.
As a random aside, one of the regular cashiers at the grocery store has joked with us when we've bought alcohol that they only need to card one person in the party and where is A's ID.

That's weird and annoying that they asked for both of your IDs. I get carded occasionally by diligent store clerks, but at Target they'll just ask for my birthday, so they can key it in the register.
In Alaska, it is state law that everyone going through the line has to show ID. I don't really know what they do with teenagers with their parents. My friend was here visiting and she for some reason didn't have her ID on her and they wouldn't sell it to me, even though I had mine and was paying.
But, you can't buy alcohol in a grocery store here so I guess just leave the teenager in the car while you run into the store. If you are in a liquor store underage and not supervised you can get a pretty hefty fine, as well as the store, so they take it pretty seriously here.
We haven't run into having to show both IDs anywhere else we have lived though (NY, KY, TX, AL).
That happened to DH and I in college when I was still 20, but we were living together. We had probably $200 in groceries and DH had a six pack of beer and they asked for both of our IDs. I was so pissed at the time, even though I don't even like beer.
I got wine at the grocery store today and was carded. They have signs everyone that it is 100% card for adult items. So I assume that is why I got carded. But carding both people? The only reason I could see for doing that is if she did not think you were together and he was buying it for you. Or if she has gotten some type of discipline before and is being overly cautious.
This is my bet. In the future I would just avoid this cashier.

This happened to my sister and I when we were buying booze for thanksgiving. she forgot her I.D. at my mom's house and they would not sell to me because they couldn't verify her age. She is 40, BTW.

This happened once at a liquor store. DH only had his passport, and they wouldn't accept a foreign document. They wouldn't sell it to me because they said now they had suspicion he would drink it. (We were both legal, DH is 4 years older). It was weird.
Weird. I'm going to assume she's been burned in the past by not carding appropriately and is taking it to the extreme now.
I get carded at TJ's - but it's just one of us (usually whomever is closest to the cashier is asked - probably because it's OBVIOUS WE'RE OF AGE SO THIS IS A FORMALITY). I've never been carded with my DH when only one was making a purchase.
Obviously separately carded in my youth when entering bars/similar. But that's a lifetime ago at this point *le sigh*
The old state-run liquor stores used to have to card everyone that was in line. In the beer & wine only days, grocery stores didn't have the same rules. These days grocery stores can sell booze, but I have no idea if they card everybody in line.
The grocery stores here card everybody, no matter what, so I am used to it. But they only require 1 ID. They just need a date that they can enter into the computer; can't ring up booze without a DOB entered. I don't think I've ever been asked for ID in addition to Calvin or vice versa.
I did run into the two IDs thing recently in an airport bar. I tried to order two pints of beer on our layover in HNL, and they wouldn't pour the 2nd one until Calvin showed up and showed his ID too.
I'd probably go talk to a manager and ask what the cashiers are supposed to do. Just so that I know for future reference and can be prepared if necessary.
I think that DH and I have both been carded at least once while buying alcohol. It probably varies a little by state, but any place selling alcohol can choose to card anyone in the group purchasing alcohol, even if you just happened to run into someone at the store.
I would be tempted to make a "we're both in our 30s, but this beer is for our 14-year-old nephew" joke. Except it seems like it might not go over well with this lady.

This is our normal store and no one asks for more than one. Actually, they usually don't even care if I'm the one that puts it on the belt and H shows his ID.
I will avoid this lady in the future but her line is always open. Maybe everyone else has caught on that she's a hardass and they check out elsewhere
happens to us all the time at our nearest grocery store, which is super close to a big university. I've finally trained myself to remember my wallet, but they have held the (huge!) line up while I ran out to the car while H stood there with all our groceries and a screaming DD to grab my wallet because of this (and why doesn't SHE have to provide ID?!). I'm 34 and look...34. They also make us swipe the paying person's DL in the machine and sign something. It's so stupid. I don't think it is a state thing either because none of the other stores in town make us jump through such hoops. I think it is directly related to the number of (underage) college students who use this particular store.

This would happen to DH and me regularly until the last couple of years. I always looked younger then I was so I just assumed that's why plus DH is 6 years older. Now I have gray hair and bags under my eyes from DD2 so I don't look young anymore haha

You live in Mass, totally normal. Anywhere else, not normal at all. If we're buying booze and happen to go in together, we always both make sure we have our IDs. It's so annoying.

Normal here but it depends on the cashier. Some don't care but some will look at both of ours. I don't think they would keep it like that though, so that part is a little weird. I do live in a state where you can't buy it in a grocery store and live in a college town, so it's probably slightly stricter at certain stores around here.

We've only both had to show ids at a convenience store on campus cards everyone to avoid people buying for an underage friend and passing it off on property.
Once at the grocery store I forgot my id... They would not sell to me at all even though I am old. My husband had to come to the store to buy my wine. As soon as he walked in, the cashier recognized him and rang it up with no id :/ he may have been going to the store twice a day lol once for morning energy drink and picking up lunch, then after work for dinner fixings. Everyone in the store knows him
