Reusable swim diapers are actually better than disposables because they have elastic around the waist and legs. Disposables don't have much of any elastic at the top, so if it's not 100% soft and you don't have a cover on it, the likelihood of pool contamination is much higher.
We never had a problem with our reusable swim diapers. I think they were $12 each and we do a lot of swimming year round, so it was definitely worth it.

I don't like the reusable ones because I have an issue getting them off, I prefer the disposable ones that I can just rip the sides, without having to maneuver it off

My only issue with reusable is that I got the ones that you have to slide up and down to get on and off and when they poop.... yeah not good. It always ends up everywhere on their legs. So I'd get one that snaps on if you can (do they make them like that?).
Piggybacking (even though I was the OP of the previous swim diaper post): How many reusable swim diapers do you own? Is two enough for a beach trip and 1-2 days a week at the pool?
ETA (sorry fussybutt14 for the postjack): Favorite brands? Also, sizing question. I'm looking at the size chart for iPlay and it says that small is 10-18 lbs and medium is 18-22 lbs. M is around 17 lbs now and we're going to the beach in 3.5 weeks, so he'll probably be approaching 18 lbs. Can I go ahead and buy mediums, or do I need to size down? I don't want the medium to be too big and result in a shituation in the pool...
We just use an old pocket cloth diaper with no insert as our swim diaper. You could probably find one on a BST group, some diaper stores do swaps - the PUL doesn't have to be good (the chlorine will damage it, anyway), it just has to contain the poo. Ours is one that started leaking for regular use, so it was relegated to swim diaper.
I had a pull on one, and just thank my lucky stars that he never pooped in it.
We also have a Bummis swim diaper - it has strong hook and loop closures, so no pulling.

We have three, and that was plenty for 2x week swim lessons plus the occasional outing. The iPlay one is the one that pulls up, and we rarely use it - it's our back up.
Regarding size, unless he has skinny legs, I'd go ahead and size up so it lasts all summer.

This was us. I had a badly stained pocket diaper that I used as a swim diaper, and a couple of reusables as backup. All were hook and loop, so easy on/off.
We use our cloth diapers without inserts more often than disposable swim diapers. I much prefer the reusable route. They contain poop well, and feel more secure.
Also: If you do the re-usable diaper, do you put a bathing suit bottom over it (I'm looking at rash guard sets) or can she just wear the diaper? (I'm really trying to figure out if I have to get a rash guard that matches the diaper! LOL)
We do both - last summer, we had more swim diapers than trunks/bottoms, so some days he ended up in just the diaper. There's no need for an extra bottom, but sometimes it's cuter

We took three (iPlay brand) with us on a 7-day beach trip and I think we would have been fine with two.

We put swim trunks over his swim diapers, just because we had them.

I'd get the 18-22 lb size - they're really snug by the top of the weight range. I've only ever had 2 in a size - one to wear and one emergency backup. They dry fairly fast so you can use them days in a row.
I've used iPlay and Charlie Banana and both were fine.

I have a lot of these. Like 30. If you PM me, I'll send you one for shipping.
We use the Bummi Swimmi reusable swim diapers and love them. His swim lesson place requires that they wear two reusable swim diapers, so we just layer them and have never had an issue. They also have Velcro tabs kind of like regular diapers, so they are super easy to get on and off.

Swim class required a disposable under a reusable. It was nice i could just throw out the disposable if there was a poopy diaper, put a new one in, and keep going.

I use the reuseable iPlay swim diapers, they snap off on one side. Works great!

I do swim trunks over a reuseable swim diaper (iPlay brand). It looks cuter and proves sun protection on his upper legs. Less skin to remember to put sunscreen on.
Ok got it. I think I just imagined there was some amazing water proof quality to these diapers. At least that is what I imagined before these very illuminating threads.
