help "for a friend" - charting, spotting, what does it mean?

Your "friend" could be just having an off cycle.

My cycles are normally 35-40 days and I have had an odd cycle that was 28 days.

I do second the test that @tambcat said to take.

I spotted when my period was due with both pregnancies, so I suppose pregnancy is possible. I'd test and keep testing once a week until my period started.

I think it sounds like your friend hasn't gotten to CD 1 yet. So either it's another long cycle or time to take a pregnancy test. Any updates from this friend?

Why do you say that? I am pretty clueless about this stuff, but I think she has a history of irregular cycles, if that makes a difference. I haven't heard any more from her yet, but I'll post when I do.

Spotting doesn't count as CD1, and it sounded from the OP like it was all just spotting so far, some brown, some red. If, on the other hand, the red days were flow that needed a pad/tampon as opposed to just a liner, then maybe it could count as CD1. I feel for her, I've had some bizarre cycles before that didn't make much sense.
