On week days, I have to work a little bit to even hit 5,000 Weekends (unless I'm not feeling well), I'm usually 7-8,000.
The steps don't come easy for me either. It's a struggle to stay active. I walk ~.5 miles on a normal commute day. I've been starting to walk to/from a farther bus stop to get in more steps.
On top of my normal work out, I walk ~7000 steps round trip to/from gym.
Also, I just randomly walk in place while watching TV if i know I'm not close enough to meeting my numbers for the day.
And people at work know about the healthy challenge, so they'll invite me to walk to Starbucks or whatever, even though I don't get anything, just so I can get steps in.
