I need to get one, but I'm overwhelmed by online reviews. At first I thought I just wanted a snapshot printer, but I really would like the option to print 5x7 and I don't need anything portable. I also don't need an all-in-one. Is there a simple printer out there that does quality prints for under $200?
There are lots of printers out there that will meet your needs for less than $200 (if you want one that prints 12 x 12 sheets it may be more, I don't know). Do you have a Best Buy near you? Most of them are set up so you can print a picture on the printers to see what the quality is like.

I don't print a lot of photos with it (I print a lot of other full color documents though), but I have a Canon MP970. I bought it because it scans negatives, which is a bonus when you have a shoe box full of them (like I have of my own photos and one or two from my mom's photo hoarding as well). The ink is a little expensive because it's a photo printer and has multiple cartridges (Yellow, Photo Cyan, Cyan, Photo Magenta, Magenta and 2 Blacks) but when one cartridge runs out, you only have to replace that one cartridge. I order Canon compatible ink online from 123ink.com I believe (I got an email from them from mypoints.com and they had pretty good prices and free shipping, plus I get points for mypoints that I can redeem for gift cards).
I purchased it on newegg.com, but it reviews really well from Google's shopping search. I didn't read them, so you might sort through and see what they say re: photo printing.

I do have a nice printer. But I don't print that many photo's at home. Generally its way cheaper to print them out at Costco. I do the one hour photo while I'm grocery shopping.
