Custom art piece (embroidery)

The wall above DS's crib is bare and I've decided I want to hang something there. We live in Colorado and ski a lot, so I think I want to do something like a trail map of our home mountain. I don't just want a picture though. I think it would be cool if it were different textures, maybe embroidered for the various runs, something like that.

Anyone have an Etsy seller or ideas on how to get something like this made? I'm not really sure where to look exactly.

I think you'll want to search for custom cross-stitch. From there I would just ask a seller if they can do a custom piece if nobody has what you want.

I think this project calls for actual embroidery, not cross stitch. It sounds really cool though!

There are also more modern style quilters that are doing some amazing stuff with various thread types creating appliques and almost drawing with the thread.

I think it is called Thread Painting.

Are you crafty at all? If so, you could get yourself one of those awesome state dish towels (sorry for the huge image) and pick out a few things that you could stitch on top of with coordinating embroidery floss. (maybe just the words in this towel or something like that - there are a few variations of these towels).  

There are embroidery dowels that you can use to stretch the piece from the top and bottom and then hang it.  Or you could frame it.

There are computer programs where you can scan a picture of something, and it will convert it into a chart for cross-stitching or embroidery. My mom did this with a picture of my nephew.

pagas, those are really cool! I wish I had found them earlier.

I got something made from someone on Etsy and think it turned out pretty well. I'll have to post a pic when I get home this afternoon.

Eta: ok, I'm feeling better about what I had made. That hapticlab place is awesome, but fucking expensive!
