They are calling it a possible "mass casualty incident". How terrifying. There are dozens and dozens of rescuers out there just looking for victims with flashlights. It's so dark.
I used to work in emergency management in Philly and this brings it all back. Lots of prayers for those involved and for the first responders out there.
Watching the local news and it looks so terrifying. There are unconfirmed reports of casualties and I hope that is not true.
I also wish these reporters would leave the victims the hell alone. They are obviously startled and shaken and these idiots have cameras and mics in their faces.

The good news is that Philly EDs are some of the best in the country and are more equipped to handle this than those in rural south or central Jersey. At this time of night it'd take them 10 minutes to get to Penn's emergency room and that's among the best in the world.
Watching it on news now. Two Amtrak accidents this week?
There is generally a person struck on the tracks at least a few times a week when you combine all rail sources and grade crossing/trespasser incidents.

The thing I read that is sticking with me was from a woman who said she usually sits in the quiet cars (which I'm reading were the most damaged) but had a phone call and went to a car she could talk on. Those poor people.
I stayed up until 1 AM watching this. Life is so fleeting, you just never know. SO many people I know use that train regularly to get between here and NYC (including my H). Those poor people and their families.

You just can't turn it off. We take that train often. My BFF is supposed to come in from NYC on Friday on Amtrak. I guess NJ Transit is honoring Amtrak tickets. It's just so crazy to see the wreckage. That track is bent. I wonder what happened. No explosions or anything. I just couldn't imagine.
The videos it shows on the news makes it look like a final destination movie. Those poor people. I can't imagine how terrifying it must have been. Are all people accounted for?
I was wondering this, too. The news is saying they are in the process of uplifting trains to look for more people just in case. I have no idea

H and I caught it on the news last night. We we're both shocked at the IG footage already posted. People were trapped and using cell phones for lights. Stop recording and help douches! One person could be heard directing people around the debris and another was telling people they were coming to get them freed.
I'm praying the daylight will help find survivors.
The only positive I can take from this is that it seems as though every piece of the response team did a fantastic job - Fire Dept., Police, Mayor's Office, hospitals, NTSB, Homeland Security. Say what you will about Mayor Nutter but I think he does a good job with instances like this.

Ugh. These poor people.
I feel like they practice this stuff frequently. I am also impressed with the response.

the Chief Medical Officer at Temple said that many of their nurses and doctors just came in on their own when they heard about it. that kind of stuff brings tears to my eyes.

I have no use for Nutter, but yes, he is very, very good in emergencies.
The accident was close to my mom's house, so I'm very familiar with the area. It's breaking my heart.
