However, every time it even thunders a little she shakes. She's shaking so bad next to me she can hardly sit still and her panting is terrible.
How do I calm her down? I cannot imagine this stress is good for her. I have her wrapped in a blanket next to me and if I squeeze her tightly she stops for a little bit.
I was thinking about maybe trying a thundershirt but in the mean time, I feel so bad for her.
And it's hard to share and cuddle in a chair with a 50lb coonhound.

My dog is 6 and still does this. I basically use the thunder shirt technique-I hug him really tight and try to shush him in his ear. Poor puppies. They are just so sad and pathetic when it happens.
I don't have a dog, but my in-laws' dog is 11 and is still terrified of thunderstorms. We just hug her tight when it happens. It seems to help some. I always feel bad for her if I know she's home alone and there's a storm

This is what we do. Also, we freeze yogurt and give them to her to lick on and keep her busy. Frosty Paws or treats with PB work just as well.
One of our dogs is like this. She would flip out. Very anxious dog. Our vet gave us some drugs to use during the spring as we needed. We would also keep the house as loud as possible to drown out the storms. She's 15 now, and her hearing is poor. We only need to medicate her around the fourth of July.
A coworker tried Rescue Remedy and said it made a huge difference. She put a few drops on a liver treat, gave it to her dog just before the storm started and said it was like a different dog. Considering the size of the storm we had the other night she was NOT expecting it to work that well. You should be able to get it at any health food store.
