If your dh is handy in any way make your own. There's tons of blueprints online. I think it maybe took dh four hours and we have one that's eight foot long with a cover that doubles as a bench. It's nice because it's really grown with the kids--ds is over four feet tall and would be squished in one of the plastic ones.

We have the turtle sandbox. It's too small. I think building one or a larger one would last longer. Other outdoor stuff: I've filled my water table with oatmeal, corn, and moon sand stuff and that was a hit. Sidewalk chalk to make hopscotch, draw, write. Bubbles. Outdoor picnics.

We have a turtle too. It was great but now at age 4 it's definitely too small. My friends DH built his kids one with some wood and they just cover it with a tarp and that works great. Someone working at Home Depot just told him what to get and how to do it. Took him an hour or so.

No sandbox, but I do have a handful of the flattish Rubbermaid type bins (like the under the bed ones) that I fill with a variety of sensory stuff and pull out when requested. We have cloud dough, rice, and coffee beans. I like it in the bins because I can put it wherever the kids want to play - the porch, the sidewalk, the kitchen. We also have a water table ( you could put sensory stuff in it), a fairy garden, a pot of just dirt (primarily so DS leaves DD's fairy garden alone - he digs, drives trucks, and fills things up in it). DS just got a cozy coupe which he adores, and I am looking for a little basketball hoop. Otherwise we have the usual collection of chalk, bubbles, balls, jump ropes, etc. And trucks. Lots and lots of trucks. And the mega blocks just got moved from the playroom to outside and are getting a lot more play.

Yeah we've got the plastic crab one. Both kids still play with it, and it's not bad if it's just the 2 of them, but if we have the neighbor kid or any other kids over, they can't really all play at the same time.

Oh basketball hoop is a great idea. My kids would love that
DH and I built ours. It doesn't have a lid but we did find draw out on if we wanted to add it. It's 8x8 and the perfect size. We built it for Ds1's 2nd birthday and he has played in it everyday for 3 years. It is large enough to fit plenty of toys and 4-5 kids his size.

DD's favorite non-water outdoor toys right now are a t-ball set, slide, giant oversized balls, and we sometimes fill the water table with shaving cream and mix in gel food coloring.

Did he use the Ana white plans?
No we ended up doing a bigger one with a different configuration for the cover/bench. I will try to remember to take a picture tomorrow and post.
