I don't even know the last time I saw a gas attendant
I don't think I ever saw one, apart from the attendant/cashier inside that takes your money. Or in the movies. Obviously I've never been to New Jersey.
It's glorious when you don't want to get out of the car, but a PITA when there's only one attendant and several people waiting by the pumps for him to come over for their turn.
I live in NJ and have never pumped gas in my life.
Our gas is cheaper than everywhere else, AND I don't have to get out of my dry, toasty car when I need gas in the winter, so I have zero complaints about this system.
I am in NJ now and it is glorious! On the way back to PA I always fill up heading home in some small town and pay at least 20-30 cents less. But, I think Christie is trying to pass another gas tax which probably close the price disparity
I asked my aunt about it being cheaper one day, and she said it's because of the gas refineries that are there. Who knows how true that is though.
I read that it's because gas taxes are among the lowest in the country. I don't know why they've been so low for so long though. I ain't complaining. Hell, even if they get raised so that they are on par with NY prices, I'm still taking the lazy route and filling up in Jersey.
I went to a pre-pro Sounders game when I lived in Seattle, back in the day. I got the crowd taunting the Portland team with "We pump our own gas". Clap Clap ClapClapClap. It was glorious.
And now I live in the land of incompetent gas-pumpers.
Oregonian checking in, I think it's great. Older and disabled people don't have to drive around to find a full-service place, and there's always a need for low skill jobs.
However, I plan to take my daughter over the river to Vancouver soon to show her how it's done. Having to ask some random in California is mortifying on your first road trip.
But why don't you pump it yourself? I wish someone would pump my gas though. I would pay extra for that in the winter months.
I've always heard that it's a job creation/preservation measure. Not sure if that's true or if there's another reason, but that's what I've always heard.
I always buy gas if I'm in Jersey. Most weekends I stop in for wine and gas- both are cheaper than in my home state of PA. New Jerseyans cross the bridge in the other direction for cigarettes.

I thought it had to do with preventing drive-aways.

I've never heard that, but wouldn't be surprised if it's that either.

I think at this point it is. I am sure there was some sort of safety thing associated with it originally, but at this point, why get rid of it? It provides jobs that wouldn't necessarily exist otherwise, the gas station owners are still making a profit, seems like a win-win for everyone.

Well, poor Exxon is really hurting these days. They can't possibly afford extra operating costs after that $9 billion fine they didn't have to pay to NJ thanks to Christie. Paying people to pump the gas might hurt the shareholders.
