I'm having really bad abdominal soreness and cramping last night and today. It came on after I ate ice cream last night. I notice that if I have too much ice cream at once, my stomach is wrecked. Does a lactose intolerance reaction last this long? I've got a call into my doctor but was wondering if anyone has experienced something like this. TIA!
I wouldn't say it lasts that long, but I've noticed much more frequent and severe reactions as I've gotten older I usually feel better after a few hours though. For me, I'd assume something else was wrong if I still felt that awful the next day.
For me it's usually over in less than 12 hours, but my Lactose intolerance is relatively mild compared to other people. Ice cream and milk are the worst culprits. A normal amount of cheese is usually no problem (lots of cheese can be bad though).
You might have really screwed your gut up. You gotta take lactaid (lactase enzyme) if you are going to eat lactose. Get some anti-gas meds like symethicone. You can even use your baby's gas drops. Then go on the BRAT diet until things go back to normal. I'm sorry you are having a rough time! Intolerances are not something to ignore.

Thanks everyone! I'm still have a lot of dull pain in my stomach. I really just feel bloated. It's uncomfortable. I did call my doctor and got a blood test done. Of course I'll have to wait until Tuesday for her to tell me what the results mean. I have no idea how any of the results can relate to my current issues.
He can do most cheeses (he's a chemist and explained the how fermentation impacts lactose- something something, blah, blah, blah. It was boring I didn't listen), but ice cream or even milk in pancakes will do him in.
We discovered this about 15 years ago when we went to visit his family in IN and he was hitting the Steak'n'Shake milkshakes pretty hard. His brother (an ER doc) thought it was a gallbladder attack and gave him Vicodin for the drive home. His gut was jacked up for a couple of days. Bloating, nerve pain from stretched intestines, etc.
He does Lactaid ahead of most dairy. Usually he takes 4 at a time. They don't always work, btw.
