I don't know if I think it's pretty or gross. I will go with pretty. It is staring at me, though.
I will say that when I first saw it, I was a bit freaked out. I mean, it was huge (like at least 6 inches across) and totally not what I expected to find walking across the lawn to the garden gate.
Michigan. Apparently it is a member of the giant silk moth family. I have lived in its range for more than 40 years and this is the first time I have seen one.
And, according to Wikipedia, a giant moth of this type was a messenger for Gandalf and the eagles in the LOTR.
It's so sad to be a moth. If you were your beautiful cousin the butterfly, everyone would be awwwing over you and nobody would be calling you creepy. MOTHS ARE BEAUTIFUL TOO. (Yes, I do have beautiful cousins, why do you ask? jerks!)
